The MLS expansion team is expected to begin play in the 2018 season.
Ferrell, as only he could, sprinkled the announcement with his usual brand of humor, per Jeff Carlisle of ESPN FC:
He isn't the only comedian and actor to have an ownership stake in an MLS club, though, as Grant Wahl of Sports Illustrated tweeted:
Ben Teller of Fox Sports was certainly excited to see Ferrell join the ownership group:
The Saturday Night Live alum joins a long list of LAFC owners, including Magic Johnson, Nomar Garciaparra, Mia Hamm, Tony Robbins, Vincent Tan—the owner of Cardiff City Football Club—and ESPN NBA analyst Tom Penn, among others.
The franchise also unveiled its new crest and color scheme on Thursday:
The LA Galaxy have been one of MLS' most successful franchises, so the expectations will be high for LAFC. And the hope will be that a spirited rivalry develops between the two Los Angeles clubs.
