Recap
Arsenal needed a minor miracle in Athens, and Olivier Giroud got them rolling with a deft header to open the scoring, the first of his hat-trick. The oft-criticised Frenchman has been surprisingly efficient in this year's tournament, according to Squawka:
Giroud netted twice after the break, with his third coming from the penalty spot. It was a perfectly timed piece of history for the Arsenal striker, per the tournament's official Twitter feed:
Speaking of history, Giroud now shares a piece with a true Gunners legend, according to OptaFranz:
Elsewhere in Group F, Bayern Munich wrapped up their qualification campaign with a steady performance in Croatia, beating Dinamo Zagreb 2-0. Robert Lewandowski bagged a brace for a Munich side that looks irrepressible this season.
Chelsea needed a win to be certain of qualification from Group G. An early Ivan Marcano own goal gave Jose Mourinho's side the lead against old club FC Porto at Stamford Bridge.
As OptaJoe pointed out, it's far from the first time the Blues have benefited from an own goal this season:
Willian added a second for Chelsea after the break. The goal put the Brazilian in select company in the tournament:
Qualifying certainly represents a boost for beleaguered manager Mourinho.
Porto's defeat not only meant Chelsea topped the group, but Dynamo Kiev also went through in their place after seeing off Maccabi Tel Aviv 1-0 at home thanks to a Denys Garmash goal.
It went rough for Gary Neville in his official debut as new Valencia manager. Lyon went in front at the Mestalla, courtesy of Max Cornet.
His goal continued an unwanted run for Los Che, according to WhoScored.com:
Things got worse for Neville when Alexandre Lacazette added a second for the Ligue 1 side. The Frenchman has been in prolific form recently:
Top spot in Group H had already been secured by Zenit St. Petersburg. Artem Dzyuba kept up his scoring run for Zenit:
But the Russian side were ultimately beaten by KAA Gent, which meant the Belgians booked their surprise passage to the knockout phase. Goals from Laurent Depoitre and substitute Danijel Milicevic proved enough for the hosts.
In the process, they made history for their country:
Former Manchester United man Javier Hernandez continues to enjoy his time with Bundesliga club Bayer 04 Leverkusen. He bagged an equaliser as Leverkusen entertained holders Barcelona in Group E. It continued a prolific scoring run:
In the process, the Mexican striker made history against Barca, according to OptaJose:
Setanta Sports commentator Rob Daly emphasised what a bargain Hernandez has been since leaving Old Trafford:
As good as Hernandez has been, though, every player aspires to the standards set by Lionel Messi. He gave Barca the lead in Germany, earning another yet another landmark:
OptaFranz noted how Messi just loves scoring against German opposition:
With Messi back on form, working with Luis Suarez and Neymar Jr., Barca still have the firepower to retain their trophy.
Group E also saw AS Roma go through after a goalless draw with BATE Borisov.
The night ultimately belonged to the Gunners, who recovered from losing their first two games to go through. But every side who made it will know how powerful the likes of Bayern and Barca are looking.
Beating either is going to require a Herculean effort this season.
