Champions League Results 2015: Latest Group Tables After Tuesday Scores

Tom SunderlandOct 20, 2015

Arsenal breathed a new lease of life into their Champions League season on Tuesday night after pulling off a 2-0 victory over Bundesliga champions Bayern Munich, while Bayer Leverkusen and Roma drew 4-4 in Germany.

The BayArena played host to an eight-goal thriller and a group-stage fixture that's likely to go down as one of the best this year after manager Roger Schmidt's side struck late to share the spoils with the Giallorossi.

Chelsea were far less content with their draw against Dynamo Kiev after a long trip to Ukraine ended up bearing no goals in what was the latest frustration for under-fire manager Jose Mourinho.

Recap

Arsenal fans may say it was worth going without a Champions League point up until this point just to savour Tuesday's 2-0 win over Bayern Munich all the more thanks to goals from Olivier Giroud and Mesut Ozil.

His place in the starting lineup may be in question, but Giroud was super-substitute once more, coming off the bench in the 74th minute to scramble home a woefully defended free-kick just three minutes later.

Going in scoreless at the break was an amicable enough result for manager Arsene Wenger's men, but Ozil followed up Giroud's opener with a tightly called drive at Manuel Neuer—although the referee ruled his effort had crossed the line.

Goal's Jay Jaffa did a fine job of summarising Arsenal's topsy-turvy nature in these matters, as they went from defeats against Dinamo Zagreb and Olympiakos to this most memorable of wins:

A fierce battle for Group F domination came about at the BayArena, where Javier Hernandez and Daniele De Rossi netted braces for Bayer Leverkusen and Roma, respectively.

Summer recruit Chicharito had scored just twice in his previous eight outings for the Factory Squad coming into Tuesday's collision. But a brace in the opening 19 minutes led ESPN FC's Tom Marshall to note this as a potential "turning point" for the Mexican:

The Germans couldn't hold on to their lead, though, as Roma captain Daniele De Rossi struck twice before the break to equalise, his first time ever scoring twice in a Champions League fixture and his first brace since 2009.

The drama didn't stop there as Miralem Pjanic and Iago Falque thrust Rudi Garcia's side into a 4-2 lead, and victory looked assured before Kevin Kampl and Admir Mehmedi netted in the 84th and 86th minutes, respectively.

Elsewhere, Barcelona avoided embarrassment in Belarus after Ivan Rakitic came off the bench to score twice for the travelling party in what was a classic demonstration of keep-away football.

Neymar set up both goals for the Croat, his first a scorcher from outside the box before showcasing a far more delicate chip in his second. However, Squawka Dave enthused Neymar's provisional awareness as a key factor:

Chelsea also took control of the shot count in Kiev, but a 0-0 stalemate against Group G rivals Dynamo was perhaps the fair result despite seeing Eden Hazard and Willian both knock the woodwork.

Every cloud has a silver lining, though, and Squawka pointed out the Blues have a particularly intriguing pattern emerging in their defensive stability regarding a certain veteran of their lineup:

Porto seldom looked out of control en route to a 2-0 victory over Group G strugglers Maccabi Tel Aviv, opening up a two-point cushion at the summit of Group G thanks to strikes from Vincent Aboubakar and Yacine Brahimi.

Zenit's attacking dynamos were also out in force as Hulk and Danny built on Artem Dzyuba's second-minute opener against Lyon, beating the Ligue 1 titans 3-1 following an Alexandre Lacazette consolation.

Valencia remain three points off the Group H leaders after defeating Gent 2-1 at the Mestalla on Tuesday, while Olympiakos can sit proudly as joint-Group F leaders alongside Bayern after Der FCB stumbled in north London.
