Marseille vs. Lyon Ends 1-1 After Match Temporarily Stopped to Crowd Trouble

Christopher SimpsonSep 20, 2015

Marseille's 1-1 draw with Lyon was temporarily stopped, and the players were sent back to the dressing rooms following some crowd trouble in their fiery 1-1 draw at the Stade Velodrome, according to the Mirror's Aaron Flanagan.

BT Sport presenter Lynsey Hipgrave described the incident:

As Flanagan noted, fans hurled glass bottles and flares in former Marseille player Mathieu Valbuena's direction, as well as at Lyon goalkeeper Anthony Lopes. According to Flanagan, "supporters were furious" when the Frenchman departed for Dynamo Moscow after spending eight years at the club.

Marseille's fans were particularly hostile to the midfielder throughout the match and even hung an effigy of the 30-year-old, per L'Actu Foot:

Things weren't much better on the field, with Romain Alessandrini sent off for coming through the back of Valbuena with a fierce challenge.

Per Flanagan's report, when the referee suspended the match in the 62nd minute, Lyon president Jean-Michel Aulas said, "I think it is impossible that the match restarts if the security of the players and officials can't be assured."

Both sides were eventually persuaded to take to the field once more with riot police present, where Marseille's Karim Rekik equalised to cancel out Alexandre Lacazette's first-half penalty.

The hosts could well be punished for the incident, with a fine or a behind-closed-doors match the most likely outcome.
