Wolfsburg vs. Everton: Date, Time, Live Stream, TV Info and Preview

Tom SunderlandNov 26, 2014

Everton can book their place in the Europa League's knockout round with a win at Wolfsburg on Thursday, where they'll look to continue their unbeaten run in Europe.

Roberto Martinez's side are yet to suffer defeat in the group stage, and depending on how Lille fare in Krasnodar, a draw could even be enough to seal a runners-up place at least.

The Toffees face a Wolfsburg team flying high domestically, however, having risen to second in the Bundesliga and looking like a more imposing outfit than when these two sides last met.

Wolves on the Hunt for Revenge

Dieter Hecking's side were left embarrassed after their first-ever meeting against Everton back in September, losing 4-1 at Goodison Park in what proved to be a one-sided affair.

The group opener for each side went firmly in favour of the Merseyside hosts, with Ricardo Rodriguez only managing to save some pride with an extra-time consolation, having netted an own-goal earlier in the fixture.

Since then, both teams have changed for the better as far as domestic campaigns go, but Wolfsburg enter this game on the back of a disappointing defeat away at Schalke.

As Bleacher Report's Stefan Bienkowski suggested, the loss wasn't quite of the same calibre Wolves fans have come to expect of late, having won their eight fixtures leading into that game:

For Everton, a double over Wolfsburg would not only show the sway they now boast in European competition, but also put the rubber stamp on their place in the round of 32.

Just a point behind in second, however, Wolfsburg know all too well what good a win would do for their Europa League plight, adding a must-win spice to the collision for both clubs.

Key Battle

Kevin de Bruyne vs. James McCarthy

Kevin de Bruyne's success in Germany has continued this season as the ex-Chelsea misfit continues to play the part of primary string-puller at the Volkswagen Arena.

As WhoScored.com points out, it's current Blues star Cesc Fabregas who takes top spot as Europe's most frequent assist king this season, though De Bruyne isn't far behind:

It's that exact influence that James McCarthy will be deployed to prevent. Martinez's box-to-box star has a knack for silencing the would-be menaces of his opposition, and taking Wolfsburg's chief puppeteer out of the mix will be considered a priority on Thursday.

McCarthy enters the fixture in fine form, too, having been considered for Man of the Match honours for the role he played in Everton's 2-1 win over West Ham on Saturday:

The two midfielders have near-opposite skill sets in terms of what they bring to their sides. However, McCarthy can give his creative team-mates a stronger foundation if Wolfsburg's in-form creator isn't permitted to continuously assault the Toffees' defence.
