Winners and Losers from Euro 2016 Qualifiers on October 14

Jerrad PetersOct 13, 2014

The Netherlands are in a world of trouble following their latest defeat—a 2-0 loss to Iceland in Reykjavik.

The upset—one of many in Euro 2016 qualifying so far—was one of nine matches played on Wednesday and one of three in Group A, which also saw Latvia and Turkey play to a 1-1 draw and Czech Republic double up on Kazakhstan 4-2.

In Group B, Israel picked up a 4-1 win over Andorra, while Wales beat Cyprus 2-1. Bosnia and Herzegovina and Belgium drew 1-1 in the section’s other match.

Finally, a trio of Group H contests featured Croatia’s 6-0 thumping of Azerbaijan, a 2-1 win for Norway at home to Bulgaria and Italy’s narrow 1-0 victory away to Malta.

Following are some of the winners and losers for the matches played October 14.

Winner: Martin Odegaard, Who Became Euro Qualifying’s Youngest Participant

1 of 6

Martin Odegaard won’t turn 16 until December, but on Monday he made his senior international debut for Norway.

Introduced as a 63rd-minute replacement for Mats Daehli, the Stromsgodset playmaker became Euro qualifying’s youngest-ever player and was on the pitch when Havard Nielsen scored what proved to be the winner against Bulgaria.

According to the Daily Star, Barcelona have already invited Odegaard and his father to visit their facilities ahead of a likely bid for the starlet.

Loser: Leonardo Bonucci, Who Will Miss Italy’s Showdown with Croatia

2 of 6

After three matches, Italy and Croatia are level atop Euro 2016 qualification Group H with nine points apiece.

They’ll face one another next month in Milan.

Italy, however, will go into the contest without one of their most important defenders following Leonardo Bonucci’s ejection against Malta on Monday.

The Juventus centre-back committed a last-man foul on Andre Schembri, and as a result of the red-card offense will be suspended when Croatia visit San Siro.

Winner: Omer Damari, Who Scored a Hat-Trick for Israel

3 of 6

Omer Damari became just the second Israel player to score a hat-trick in Euro qualifying (Yossi Benayoun is the other, as per Infostrada Sports) when he bagged a treble against Andorra on Monday.

It took him just three minutes to get is first—his chipped effort leaving goalkeeper Ferran Pol with no chance whatsoever.

Then, with Andorra having levelled from the penalty spot, Damari restored Israel’s lead shortly before the break when he beat Pol from in close following some good work by Tal Ben Haim.

The Austria Vienna striker’s third goal came with eight minutes remaining in normal time.

Israel have won both their Group B matches so far and trail leaders Wales by just a single point in the standings.

Winner: David Cotterill, Who Scored as an Early Substitute for Wales

4 of 6

Wales were forced into an early substitution when Simon Church had to be replaced after only six minutes against Cyprus.

David Cotterill came on for him, and seven minutes later the Birmingham City winger was on the scoresheet—his right-footed shot having given Wales the lead.

Not long after that the hosts took a 2-0 lead, and although Andy King would be sent off in the 48th minute they managed to edge their guests 2-1 in Cardiff.

Loser: The Netherlands, Who Have Lost 2 of 3

5 of 6

The Netherlands opened their Euro 2016 qualification campaign with a 2-1 loss away to Czech Republic, and although they beat Kazakhstan 3-1 in their second match they sunk to a second Group A defeat on Monday.

This time their conqueror was Iceland, who limited the Dutch to just four shots on target.

Robin van Persie, Gregory van der Wiel and Stefan de Vrij were especially poor for the third-place finishers from the 2014 World Cup, and although they’ve only played three matches in qualifying the Netherlands are nevertheless six points off the pace in their section.

Winner: Gylfi Sigurdsson, Who Scored Twice Against the Netherlands

6 of 6

Gylfi Sigurdsson scored the eighth and ninth goals of his international career for Iceland on Monday, and the brace served to vanquish the Netherlands in Reykjavik.

The Swansea forward’s first tally came from the penalty spot after just 10 minutes following Gregory van der Wiel’s foul on Birkir Bjarnason.

His second, scored with three minutes remaining in the first half, was put into the back of the net on a volley following a botched clearance from an Iceland corner.

Iceland’s nine points have them level with Czech Republic atop Group A.
