Twitter Reacts as Wojciech Szczesny Receives Red Card vs. Galatasaray

Timothy RappOct 1, 2014

Everything was going Arsenal's way early in the second half against Galatasaray. The team were up 4-0 behind a Danny Welbeck hat-trick and Alexis Sanchez goal, it appeared they could score about eight on the day given Galatasaray's porous defence and football looked fun again for the squad on the pitch.

And in one fell swoop, keeper Wojciech Szczesny put a bit of a damper on the evening, rushing in to gather the ball to sweep up a Galatasaray attack and instead taking down Burak Yilmaz in the box. That led to a straight red, Arsenal going down a man and a penalty, which Yilmaz promptly buried.

The result may not have been in question but Arsenal went from the opportunity to earn a huge advantage in goal differential going forward to sinking back into a defensive shell for much of the remainder of the match.

It was the sort of "Yeah, but" that has been muttered after more than a few Arsenal results of late. Michael Cummings of Bleacher Report perhaps summed up the thoughts of the Gooners the best with just one word:

Yep. It's been that sort of season thus far for the Gunners. Gunnerblog was a bit more exasperated:

Of course, this is nothing new for Szczesny in the Champions League. Consider the following, from Squawka Football:

Juan Arango of BBC was left amazed by that statistic:

The one positive perhaps is that David Ospina will now get the opportunity to show what he can do in the Champions League. If he shines, perhaps Arsenal will have a healthy competition going for the first-team place.

Szczesny could end up regretting this red card for a multitude of reasons, in other words.
