The hosts had the better of the play in the opening moments but ran into a razor-sharp counter from the Citizens, with Jesus Navas setting up Sergio Aguero to open the score. The Gunners could have been ahead already at that point, but new boy Danny Welbeck's chip of Joe Hart struck the post and landed back into the arms of the England 'keeper.
Arsenal came out firing in the second half and turned the situation around in 10 minutes. First Jack Wilshere showed Welbeck how to execute a chip, before Alexis Sanchez scored a beautiful volley to give the hosts the lead.
Poor defending on a corner gave Martin Demichelis an open look on goal, however, and the centre-back didn't miss. It was City's turn to push for a winner now, hitting the post twice in the final 10 minutes. Edin Dzeko came close to completing the comeback, but Wojciech Szczesny produced an excellent save to preserve the draw.
Manuel Pellegrini is normally one of the most soft-spoken managers in the Premier League, but on Saturday, the City manager showed his bark. As shared by the Associated Press' Rob Harris, he believed both Arsenal goals came after fouls against his players:
He conceded he was satisfied with getting a draw at the Emirates but repeated his stance on Mark Clattenburg's performance, per Bleacher Report's James McNicholas:
He also refused to comment on the performance of stopper Hart, who made it far too easy for Wilshere to chip him on Arsenal's first goal:
Pellegrini continued to batter Clattenburg with criticism, explaining his decision to take off scorer Aguero, per the Guardian's Daniel Taylor:
Samuel Luckhurst of HuffingtonPost.com adds more from Pellegrini:
"With City 1-0 up, Jack Wilshere was not penalised for handball inside his own box, which also enraged Pellegrini.
"The first goal was unbelievable. The referee didn't want to whistle," Pellegrini said. "And there was a clear penalty, Wilshere in front of the box, a clear penalty. I don't think this penalty was more clear than Skrtel and Liverpool."
Clattenburg officiated City's 3-2 defeat at Liverpool in April when Edin Džeko was denied a penalty and Luis Suárez escaped a second yellow card for simulation. Five months on, Pellegrini referred to Martin Skrtel's stoppage-time handball inside his own area during that clash.
"No, I don't have a problem," Pellegrini responded when asked about Clattenburg. "He had a very bad day against Liverpool and today. Arsenal scored both goals from fouls. Of course I'm disappointed with the way we conceded the goals, they were two clear fouls."
"
McNicholas believes the manager can certainly expect a fine for his comments:
The Daily Telegraph's Henry Winter said Pellegrini's outburst was not his first against a referee::
Arsene Wenger was more reserved in his comments. He praised his squad for fighting their way back into the match, although he conceded Demichelis should never have been so open to equalise for the visitors, via the club's Twitter feed:
Mathieu Debuchy had to be carried off the pitch late with what appeared to be a serious ankle injury, and Wenger fears the worst:
When asked about a potential replacement, he reminded reporters the transfer window is no longer open, per Harris:
He agreed with Pellegrini that the match got frustrating at times:
As shared by Taylor, he believed Clattenburg had a strong match, however:
City will host Chelsea next Sunday as they enter a particularly difficult part of their schedule, and with Pellegrini possibly facing a sideline ban for his comments, they could be in for another rough afternoon against a Blues team that is yet to lose in 2014-15.
The Gunners will travel to Birmingham to take on Aston Villa, where Calum Chambers will likely make his first start as the team's new right-back, in place of the injured Debuchy.
