Luis Suarez Ties Premier League Single-Season Scoring Record

Patrick ClarkeMay 5, 2014

Liverpool striker Luis Suarez made history on Monday in the Reds' 3-3 draw with Crystal Palace, tying the Premier League's single-season scoring record with his 31st league goal of the year in the 55th minute.

ESPN FC confirmed the historic occasion:

The record-tying strike certainly impressed former English football star Gary Lineker:

Despite taking a 3-0 lead on Suarez's goal 10 minutes into the second half, Liverpool would concede three goals in a span of nine minutes to deliver a huge blow to their Premier League title chances. So while Suarez will be pleased with his record-tying goal, he'll be wishing he broke it with a brace.

As a result of Liverpool's draw, Manchester City remains in the driver's seat to win the league for the second time in three years.

Although Suarez has scored and assisted more than any other player in the Premier League this season, his production has dropped off somewhat over the past six weeks.

Following a hat-trick against Cardiff City on March 22, the Uruguayan forward had 28 goals and 11 assists to his name. However, in seven matches since, Suarez has scored just three goals and recorded just one assist.

The 27-year-old has earned Man of the Match honors just once over that time as well.

Coming into Monday's match, Liverpool manager Brendan Rodgers was confident that his team could win out and score enough goals in the process to leapfrog City on Championship Sunday, per ESPN FC's Mike Whalley:

"If there is any team that can score goals and turn it around, it will be us. That will be our aim. We aim to score goals and be defensively strong."

Following the Reds' collapse at Selhurst Park, City will have to slip up in one of their last two matches in order for Liverpool to even have a shot at winning on goal differential.

With Suarez eyeing the single-season goalscoring record in Sunday's season finale against Newcastle, there's no telling how many goals he and the Reds will produce. However, it appears that Suarez and his club will have no choice but to take solace in his individual achievements at season's end.
