Top 5 Teenagers in the Premier League: Based on Performance Data
Interested in finding out who the top five teenagers in the Premier League are right now based on performance data? Well, with the help of football statistics website Squawka, we can reveal them.
The site uses what is known as a "player performance score" to evaluate a certain individual’s abilities across a number of different fields using a complex algorithm that scrutinises 14 million data points.
Squawka will award points to players for every touch of the ball, before analysing whether that action was defensive, attacking or possessional, and then applying further adjustments based on the player’s squad position and the area of the pitch where the action took place.
And so, with that in mind, these are the results of who the top-five performing teenagers in the Premier League have been so far this season:
No 5: Serge Gnabry (Arsenal)
Arsenal's Germany Under-19 international has made four appearances in the Premier League so far in this campaign for the table-topping north London club, and been mighty impressive in all of them.
The midfield player, 19, even managed to net his first-ever goal for the Gunners in their 2-1 league win at Swansea City and had the player appeared in more games this campaign, he may have ended up even higher in the rankings.
No 4: Adnan Januzaj (Manchester United)
One of the undoubted young stars of the top-flight season to date, the 18-year-old Belgium-born wide man has already appeared in six matches for the Premier League champions, which no one would have been able to predict at the start of the campaign.
And the exciting winger's second-half brace against Sunderland at the Stadium of Light last month now looks like being a pivotal moment for new Red Devils boss David Moyes, acting as it did as a catalyst to the club's unbeaten run in all competitions ever since.
No 3: Luke Shaw (Southampton)
The England U21 star has played more minutes in the Premier League this season than any of the other four rivals here, and as one would expect from the only defender in the top five, the left back has also recorded the highest defence rating of the teenagers.
However, with an impressive attack score of 66, higher than the more forward-thinking Gnabry for example, the 18-year-old clearly also has much to offer in the opposition half as well based on these stats.
No 2: Nathan Redmond (Norwich City)
Another highly promising up-and-coming England U21 international for Three Lions manager Roy Hodgson to keep an eye out for between now and next summer's FIFA World Cup finals in Brazil, especially if the wide man's displays for the struggling Canaries so far this season are anything to go by.
The 19-year-old left winger, who only moved to Carrow Road from Birmingham at the start of the close-season transfer window, has the most impressive attack score of all five youngsters on display here, which is reflected in his total of six chances created for team-mates this campaign, as well as netting his first-ever goal in the top flight against Southampton.
No 1: James Ward-Prowse (Southampton)
Yet more proof, if it were needed, of the sterling work being done by the Saints academy with the second starlet in the top five to have been produced on the south coast, and not only that, but the 19-year-old midfield player is also currently rated as the best teenager in the whole of the Premier League.
The England U21 international has set up an eye-catching 23 openings for other Southampton players during their high-flying start to the new season at St Mary's, and clearly the youngster's form is one of the main reasons behind their surprise third-place standing in the top flight at present
