Premier League Table: Latest Standings After Exciting Week 9

Richard LangfordJun 3, 2018

Fernando Torres netted a late goal to power Chelsea to a 2-1 win over Manchester City at Stamford Bridge on Sunday.

Manchester City tied that match at one in the second half but couldn't ward off the late push by Chelsea. Blues head man Jose Mourinho was a little excited about the intense win:

With front-running Arsenal posting a 2-0 win over Crystal Palace on Saturday, Chelsea was not able to make up any ground on the leader. However, the big win has it in second and has it joining Liverpool with 20 points.

Obviously, the win also helped the Blues put some distance on the dangerous Manchester City. The Citizens are now six points off the top spot.

Take a look at the complete table following Matchday 9, and then I'll take a closer look at some of the more interesting results from the past week.

The rest of the EPL had to be hoping that the Gunners' 2-1 loss to Borussia Dortmund on Oct. 22 would send Arsenal into a tailspin. However, with Arsenal returning to action against lowly Crystal Palace, there wasn't much hope of that.

I suppose there was a glimmer that the departure of manager Ian Holloway would spark an inspired performance. However, under Keith Millen, it was much of the same for Crystal Palace. It failed to score or even threaten at victory, and now the sinking club is 20th.

That would be because Sunderland picked up its first victory of the season. Fabio Borini netted a late goal against Newcastle to end his side's painful winless streak to start the year.

Moving a little, or a lot actually, closer to the top of the table, Liverpool was impressive this week.

Rolling behind Luis Suarez's hat-trick, the Reds beat West Bromwich Albion 4-1. Suarez picked up a brace in that match by the 22nd minute, and when he netted his third in the 55th minute, West Brom had yet to score.

Liverpool is an explosive and exciting squad, and with Suarez looking as good as ever after he returned to the pitch from finishing off last season's suspension at the start of the campaign, this team definitely has the firepower to contend for the title.

Tottenham, Southampton and Everton all managed to keep pace this week and maintain fourth through sixth, respectively, in the table.

The Hotspur beat Hull City 1-0, Southampton bullied Fulham 2-0, and Everton beat Aston Villa 2-0.

The EPL table looks different than most anticipated before the season, but it is all setting up for an exciting season.
