The 2013 Major League Soccer season is well under way with six weeks of play in the books. More than any season in recent memory, the opening weeks of 2013 have been full of spectacular goals with many of this year’s early season strikes already Goal of the Year candidates.
Here are the 10 best so far.
Hassoun Camara rides the bike in this Week 2 effort as he helps the Montreal Impact pick up a win in Portland against the Timbers. Camara latched onto a loose ball, leaving Timbers goalkeeper Donovan Ricketts absolutely jelly-legged.
Davy Arnaud and the Montreal Impact opened up their 2013 season with this gem. Arnaud made a great run in behind Seattle’s defense, took down a pass from Felipe with a deft touch and chipped Sounders goalkeeper Michael Gspurning with this cheeky finish.
Diego Valeri opened up the scoring for the Portland Timbers in 2013 in style with this fantastic goal. Taking a pass at the top of the box, Valeri then juggled through the Red Bulls' defense before calming slotting home past goalkeeper Luis Robles.
This beauty comes via L.A. Galaxy youngster Jose Villareal. On the play, the 19-year-old Villareal found the equalizer for the Galaxy in stoppage time against Toronto FC by scissor kicking a knock-down from a long ball into the box past the goalkeeper.
The New York Red Bulls found their first, and only, win of the 2013 season on the strength of this gorgeous goal by Thierry Henry. Fed through by Peguy Luyindula, Henry skillfully brought the ball down with his thigh and then fired past Union goalkeeper Zac MacMath on the volley.
Dillon Powers opened the action for the Colorado Rapids in last week’s game against the Portland Timbers with this laser strike in the 18th minute. On the play, Powers took a simple pass from 25 yards from goal and decided to have a go resulting in this fantastic goal.
Put through on a pass by Benny Feilhaber, Graham Zusi showed a tremendous amount of strength, determination and composure to score this goal against the Montreal Impact. After getting in behind, Impact defender Karl Ouimette did everything he could to stop Zusi, but the midfielder powered through and then coolly chipped the ball over Impact keeper Troy Perkins.
The goal sealed Sporting KC’s 2-0 win over the previously unbeaten Impact.
Eric Avila scored this terrific goal with a volleyed effort in Week 5 v. the Vancouver Whitecaps. On the play, Avila didn’t wait for the cross from Jorge Villafana to hit the ground, instead going full throttle on the effort and firing it past Whitecaps goalkeeper Joe Cannon.
This cannon shot comes courtesy of Toronto FC’s Darel Russell, who scored this wonder-strike in last weekend’s game against FC Dallas.
To top it off, the goal came in the 90th minute and helped Toronto earn the point.
The Chicago Fire picked up their first win of the 2013 season on the strength of this game-winning goal courtesy of Maicon Santos. On the play, Santos ghosted past Red Bull defender Jamison Olave with a dirty little cutback move before calmly finishing the chance past goalkeeper Luis Robles.
