Top 30 Upcoming Bosman Free Transfers

Sam TigheJun 7, 2018

The free transfer market looks rich with quality this summer.

There are plenty of players who are fed up or going stale at their current clubs who can leave for free this summer and select a new destination at will.

With cost-cutting a factor for most clubs, free agency is the way to go. Look for these players to receive plenty of attention over the course of the upcoming transfer window.

The players listed are those whose contracts are set to expire and could look to seek new pastures.

Enjoy the slideshow and feel free to add anyone you think could be a steal this summer.

Ricardo Carvalho

1 of 30

Ricardo Carvalho is reportedly considering his future as Real Madrid refuse to offer him a two-year contract—something he considers a deal breaker.

Anzi Makhachkala and Galatasaray are looming large, each happy to offer this veteran defender two years or more.

The Portuguese central defender is the epitome of experience and has performed at the highest level for close to a decade.

He'd be a quality signing for one lucky suitor this summer if talks at the Bernabeu fall flat.

Didier Drogba

2 of 30

Chelsea striker Didier Drogba is set to become a free transfer this summer as it's becoming increasingly unlikely the Blues will tie him down to a contract extension.

The issues with Chelsea's "old guard" have been well documented and Drogba represents one of those who may have been making life hard for managers in recent years.

His wages breach the £100,000 per week mark and the next Chelsea boss can look to utilise that area of the bill with a striker who can bag 20 goals next season.

There's no doubt Didier Drogba has been sensational for Chelsea, but most would agree his time is up.

Walter Samuel

3 of 30

This experienced central defender, nicknamed "The Wall," is reportedly looking for one last big pay day.

Tottenham, Arsenal and Chelsea are supposedly sniffing around the Argentinian stopper but his wage demands could be a sticking point.

There's no doubting the pedigree of Walter Samuel, only that he'll be 34 this summer and unlikely to achieve the supposed £90,000 per week contract he is demanding.

With Internazionale faltering on all fronts, it's very likely he'll pack his bags. But will he end up in the English Premier League?

My guess is no.

Rene Adler

4 of 30

Rene Adler will take his leave from Bayer Leverkusen this summer amid torrid injury issues.

Should the German goalkeeper recover from his long setbacks, he'll prove a classy acquisition on the cheap for one astute manager.

He was in contention for the 2010 German World Cup squad but had to pull out as he broke his ribs. Since then, Manuel Neuer has gone on to cement his career and become a highly regarded 'keeper.

There might be a sense of "what if" when it comes to Adler, but he's still got 10-12 years at the top if he fully recovers.

At the moment, it seems Hamburg SV are all set to take him on board.

Frederic Kanoute

5 of 30

Frederic Kanoute moving on is 50/50.

He's been with Sevilla since 2005 and has become a stalwart in the Spanish side. He's still a regular starter and consistently finds the back of the net.

Having been criticised for his attitude in the past, the former Malian international has really made the Ramón Sánchez Pizjuán his stomping ground.

But you can never rule out a move for Kanoute as he's done the rounds in the past.

He'd be a brilliant acquisition this summer, either starting for a mid-high table team or as a depth striker for a top-end side.

Anzhi Makhachkala came calling in January. They will come calling again...

Jefferson Farfan

6 of 30

In November 2011, Schalke 04 stated they would be open to the idea of parting with Jefferson Farfan in the January transfer window.

Since then no move has materialised, but contract extension talks seem to have hit a brick wall too.

Farfan is a pacey, tricky winger. He can hug the line and cross or cut inside and shoot. He showcased his talents in Europe last season during Schalke 04's UEFA Champions League run with good effect.

Internazionale are supposedly interested and the chances are we won't see the Peruvian head to the Premier League should he leave his current employers.

Tranquillo Barnetta

7 of 30

Tranquillo Barnetta, the Swiss international and Bayer Leverkusen star, almost made his way to the Premier League last season with Newcastle United the proposed destination.

Unfortunately, he's had a season plagued by injuries but still represents a potential quality addition. His contract expires in the summer and it's almost certain he won't extend his stay with the German club.

Premier League clubs could look to him again as a valuable, cost effective addition.

Any fan should be happy if their club acquires his services as his name is truly brilliant.

Mathieu Flamini

8 of 30

Mathieu Flamini hasn't had the Hollywood move he anticipated during his time at AC Milan.

The Frenchman left Arsenal on a free transfer to link up with the Italian giants back in 2009. He's had niggling injury problems and a hard time displacing some veteran midfield stalwarts already wearing the Rossoneri shirt.

He's currently sidelined with a long-term injury but due back in training very soon and if he recovers, will still be a decent pickup.

Flamini has already stated his intent to win a contract extension at AC Milan, but the club are pretty stacked at central midfield.

There's no guarantees in football.

Riccardo Montolivo

9 of 30

Fiorentina's deep-lying playmaker Riccardo Montolivo will probably leave this summer.

A move to AC Milan has been heavily touted for several seasons and considering they've lost Andrea Pirlo to Juventus, they might well make the change this summer.

His comparisons to Andrea Pirlo are plentiful, but Montolivo actually represents a much more dynamic and versatile midfielder than his compatriot.

He can play anywhere in the middle of the park, be it in a reduced, defensive role or an attacking, creative role.

Junior Hoilett

10 of 30

Blackburn Rovers will be expecting a certain degree of loyalty from David Junior Hoilett as they spent good money taking him from Canada and furthering his career in England.

Hoilett looks set to repay the Rovers for this service...by leaving on a free transfer this summer. His options will be plentiful, as his wage demands would be reasonable and he'd slot in nicely as a rotational option at one of the top six clubs in England.

Tottenham have expressed an interest. He'd also star at the likes of Aston Villa, Sunderland and Everton.

The Canadian international will have his fill of choices, that much is certain.

Goran Pandev

11 of 30

Goran Pandev will hit the open market again this summer as it looks certain he'll end his time at the Giuseppe Meazza.

Pandev is no stranger to being a free agent, having forced his way out of Lazio in order to join Jose Mourinho's Internazionale.

He's currently on loan at Napoli—although it's been tough getting a game considering the attacking talent they have on display—and while it looks like a permanent move to Southern Italy could be a viable option, it is by no means a certainty.

Mladen Petric

12 of 30

Croatian striker Mladen Petric has confirmed he will be leaving current club Hamburg SV at the end of the current season.

Petric, who also holds Swiss citizenship, has maintained a near one-in-two goal scoring record through his career at different clubs and also boasts over 40 international caps.

He has certainly established himself as a deadly finisher who represents a threat from anywhere in the penalty area.

He's 31 years old, so he still has a few seasons at the top level left in him.

Tim Wiese

13 of 30

Tim Wiese is a quality goalkeeper with wage demands to match.

Werder Bremen are struggling to come to an agreement with him and the player has openly stated he fears nothing, as he'd have plenty of suitors come July if he didn't extend his stay.

Wiese represents a typical quality German goalkeeper who is an all-around gifted stopper but doesn't get a sniff with the national team at this moment in time.

Manuel Neuer is the first choice for Germany and will remain so barring serious injury. That's a plus point for any teams looking at Wiese. Less internationals, less fatigue, less injuries.

Claudio Pizarro

14 of 30

Werder Bremen haven't got just one key player to tie down, they've got two.

Claudio Pizarro, the Peruvian who flopped at Chelsea, is the current all-time record foreign goal scorer in the Bundesliga, surpassing the legendary Giovane Elber with ease.

The striker has admitted he likes Bremen, but his future is undecided. That's not usually good news for the club who want to retain him so badly.

He's 33, but as Raul and Ruud van Nistelrooy prove, a true poacher can play on for a long time in the modern game.

Ruud Van Nistelrooy

15 of 30

Former Manchester United and Real Madrid striker Ruud van Nistelrooy could be set to end his current spell with Malaga come the end of the season.

He only penned a one-year deal with the Spanish club and hasn't exactly recorded the sorts of numbers we've come to expect from him over the years.

If he doesn't choose to renew or is cut loose by the La Liga outfit, there would be no shortage of offers for him as goals are a worthwhile commodity.

Mark Van Bommel

16 of 30

The Dutch destroyer's contract with AC Milan expires soon and his future is completely up in the air.

Despite getting on in years, his play still warrants a first team selection at a club chasing consecutive Scudettos.

His performances at the World Cup 2010 and the UEFA Champions League have kept his stock high and there'll be one hell of a battle for his signature.

AC Milan will likely want him to extend, whilst former club PSV Eindhoven have been credited with interest too.

Heurelho Gomes

17 of 30

It's been a bad year for Heurelho Gomes and it's time for him to move on.

You can't blame Harry Redknapp for recruiting Brad Friedel and shoring up the goalkeeper position what with all the mistakes Gomes has made over the last several seasons in England.

Laughably, Gomes was under the impression he'd be the No. 1 choice even with the arrival of the experienced American.

What a horrible shock that must have been come the opening game of Tottenham's season.

Ivica Olic

18 of 30

Ivica Olic is another top quality striker on offer this summer as it's seems incredibly unlikely he'll renew at FC Bayern Munich.

He simply can't displace Mario Gomez (I'm not saying that's easy) and as head coach Jupp Heynckes persists with using one out and out striker, Olic looks to be packing his bags.

He's got pedigree and reputation on his side as his track record for finding the net and working hard on the pitch precedes him.

Wolfsburg are said to be the favourites to land his signature.

Raul

19 of 30

Raul could be on the move again as Schalke continue to offer a deal that doesn't match his demands.

The Spaniard has scored 24 goals in 57 games for the German outfit and will surely continue to score due to the nature of his game.

The Real Madrid legend represents a true poacher and leader on the field who is able to conjure a goal from nothing. That's why he's still playing top level football at 34 years of age.

If I were Schalke, I'd give him two years.

Salomon Kalou

20 of 30

Salomon Kalou has been used sparingly by Chelsea for a while now and there comes a point when your career goes stale.

The Ivorian's career is definitely at that point and a move to fresh surroundings could be just what he needs.

There have been no concrete talks whatsoever to extend Kalou's contract in West London and it's a borderline certainty that he'll become a free agent this summer.

Whoever snaps him up will get a good attacking player with reams of international experience.

Craig Gordon

21 of 30

Craig Gordon is a very capable goalkeeper who has been plagued by injuries.

Steve Bruce preferred young Belgian stopper Simon Mignolet ever since Gordon acquired his last injury during his reign and with Martin O'Neill keeping faith, he doesn't look like displacing the current No. 1 at any point soon.

Martin O'Neill and Steve Bruce have both expressed their concern at the situation, admitting their reluctance to see him go.

The investment in Gordon was heavy and to see him leave for nothing doesn't represent good business, but the ball is in the 'keeper's court.

Davide Astori

22 of 30

Davide Astori isn't a household name at the moment but he's making the right moves to get noticed.

He's been in and around the Italy squad for the European Championship qualifiers having performed well for Cagliari over the last few seasons.

He was previously owned by AC Milan and has, in the past, expressed a desire to go back to the San Siro and make himself a success.

His contract will expire this summer and he should have a number of suitors—whether or not AC Milan want him back.

Christian Chivu

23 of 30

Christian Chivu is in "no rush" to sign a new deal with Internazionale. We all know what that means.

He's open to joining Real Madrid and Ajax are standing byI think it's safe to say he'll seek new pastures this summer.

He's a steady left-back by modern standards. Doesn't commit himself too heavily on offense but doesn't shirk his duties in defence. Need evidence? Try the fractured skull he suffered.

The protective cap he sports looks ridiculous but you've got to respect the fact that he still sticks his head in where it hurts.

Royston Drenthe

24 of 30

Whoever picks up Royston Drenthe is a lucky manager.

We've already seen the classic David Moyes magic in the transfer window, picking him up on loan from Real Madrid. He's cost next to nothing and he's been brilliant.

Drenthe is an explosive, exciting and unpredictable player. He's quick, he's got a long shot and he's comfortable almost anywhere on the pitch.

Everton will likely want to pick him up on a permanent deal but he won't be short of suitors. Should a bigger club than Everton step in, they might be blown out of the water.

Danijel Pranjic

25 of 30

Danijel Pranjic can't wait to leave FC Bayern Munich.

He was close to a move in January with Everton expressing an interest in his services, but his parent club blocked the move due to high monetary demands.

The Croatian has since voiced his extreme displeasure at the events that unfolded and has confirmed his intent to leave the club in the summer.

He's a versatile, experienced player who can slot into the midfield or defensive line with ease.

Sotiris Ninis

26 of 30

Sotiris Ninis is a young, exciting Greek winger who currently plies his trade for Panathinaikos

He's already made over 80 appearances for his sides first team despite being just 21 years of age and has faced plenty of speculation over his future in the past.

He can play on either flank or through the middle in a creative, attacking role. His technical skills belie his age and could be a fantastic catch for a top European side.

He might require a loan to start with but it's an investment worth making.

Adriano

27 of 30

Adriano has had no shortage of problems in his career.

This link states that after an operation on a broken arm, the striker spent far too long back in his native Brazil and AS Roma felt it necessary to terminate his contract early.

He's currently back in his homeland on a permanent basis with Corinthians, although his contract runs out in the summer and a European club could be tempted.

Need any more evidence to deter you? Try this one out for size.

Robert Green

28 of 30

Whether or not Robert Green moves depends solely on West Ham's league fortunes.

The Hammers have had a great season and look odds-on for promotion but we know how quickly things can change (just ask Harry Redknapp).

There's no doubt that Green is still a very good goalkeeper. There's a reason he was firmly entrenched into Fabio Capello's England plans.

If West Ham fall short on the promotion chase, expect a Premier League club to snap this guy up. In the meantime, Sam Allardyce is working hard to tie his No. 1 'keeper down.

Jose Bosingwa

29 of 30

Jose Bosingwa is another Chelsea player who may look for new pastures at the end of his current contract.

It's fair to say that most Blues fans have had enough of the Portuguese right-back as his lack of defensive talents frequently make our eyebrows rise.

Andre Villas-Boas continued to select him in his starting lineup, even ahead of the consistently brilliant Branislav Ivanovic.

Chelsea fans won't miss him too much.

Notable Absentees

30 of 30

Dimitar Bervatov - Manchester United are set to exercise a clause in his contract, renewing it for a further 12 months. He could then be sold, but he won't be leaving for free.

Darren Fletcher - The Scot's contract expires this summer and his future is up in the air. He's currently fighting a bowel condition which may see him return to football, but may end his career. Will he return at full throttle and will Sir Alex Ferguson retain him?

Andreas Beck - After months of speculation, the Hoffenheim captain has signed a two-year extension to his current deal, tying him to the club until 2014.

Daniele De Rossi - Links to Manchester City were aplenty, but in the end the Roma captain thrashed out a new deal in the capital.

Alessando Nesta - If he doesn't renew he'll retire. If he takes up coaching he'll stay with AC Milan.

Ledley King - Would be more likely to renew at Tottenham Hotspur. Fully expected to remain a one-club man.

Ryan Giggs - We all know he's Manchester United through and through. Same as Nesta.

Massimo Ambrosini - See Nesta and Giggs.

Owen Hargreaves - With fitness issues resurfacing, there's no way Hargreaves will earn an extension at Manchester City

Clarence Seedorf - He's well endorsed with AC Milan. If he hangs up his boots he should remain with the club in some capacity or retire altogether.

Gennaro Gattuso - Yet another longstanding AC Milan legend who wouldn't depart the club for another.

Eric Abidal - Has signed a new deal with Barcelona, extending his stay at the club until 2013.

Pablo Aimar - Took "less than 10 minutes" to agree an extension with Benfica.

Javier Saviola - Followed Aimar's example and extended by one year.
