Miami Heat Rumors: Why Gilbert Arenas Would Be a Horrendous Fit for Miami

Tim KeeneyDec 20, 2011

Gilbert Arenas cleared waivers last Sunday and, shockingly, no team has signed him. Imagine that.

You have to think, though, that eventually some sucker of a team will roll the dice on a guy that averaged almost 30 points per game two years in a row. And is still just 29 years old.

Unfortunately for Heat fans, Miami is on that list (along with the Lakers, Knicks and any team that trades for Dwight Howard).

I know what you're thinking. OK, no I don't, but I know what the common perception probably is. With LeBron James, Dwayne Wade and Chris Bosh, the Heat are a point guard away from being the easy favorite for the NBA title.

Until Mario Chalmers figures things out, I completely agree with that perception. Point guard (and center) is clearly Miami's worst position.

But Gilbert Arenas is not the answer. Not even close.

Sure, he's still 29 and sure, he might be had at a lower price than he's really worth.

This isn't a point guard, though. This is a clear shooting guard that has been tagged as a point guard for his whole career. That's far from what Miami needs at this "point" in time.

For his career, Arenas has jacked up 16 shots per game and only dished out five assists per contest. Add in the three turnovers per game and you have some atrocious numbers if you are looking for a true point guard.

Those type of numbers were, of course, fine when he was needed to be the scorer in Washington. However, James, Wade and Bosh don't need another scorer. Miami needs their point guard to be a passer.

A passer, Gilbert Arenas is not. There just wouldn't be enough shots to go around for him to be effective and he would essentially become useless.

Oh yes, and there's also the fact that Arenas had gun problems in Washington and is coming off an atrocious half of a season with Orlando, in which he averaged eight points and three assists per game.

Those aren't the type of things you want to be taking a risk on. Especially if your team is a title contender. Arenas could instantly derail those aspirations.

So while an Arenas-Wade-James-Bosh Big Four might look good on paper, it won't look good in real life. So please, Miami, don't try it.

Let him ruin the Knicks or Lakers this year.
