Miami Heat Rumors: Gilbert Arenas Would Add Nothing to Talent-Laden Roster
Because Gilbert Arenas is still owed $62.4 million, the Orlando Magic decided to use their one-time amnesty clause on him.
He has since cleared waivers and will be looking to catch on with a contender, but the Miami Heat shouldn't be in the running.
According to Marc Stein of ESPN.com, the Heat are one team rumored to have some interest in "Agent Zero." While Arenas was once a highly effective scoring guard for the Washington Wizards, it became very apparent that he lost a step with the Magic last season.
Arenas averaged just eight points per game in 49 contests with Magic last season while shooting a mere 34.4 percent from the field. Due to knee injuries, Arenas is no longer able to get the basket, and has instead developed into a one-dimensional chucker from three-point range.
While you could argue that Arenas' experience could be good for the Heat and their core of LeBron James, Dwyane Wade and Chris Bosh, there isn't a real role for him on the team.
Miami already has plenty of point guards in Mario Chalmers, Norris Cole and Eddie House, and Mike Miller and James Jones are capable three-point gunners off the bench.
With that in mind, Arenas simply isn't a good fit.
Heat President Pat Riley already has said that 13 of the team's 15 roster spots are essentially locked in as well, meaning there isn't much reason to go out and sign another player, especially with a bunch of guys already battling for the final two spots.
Arenas would have been an awesome fit in his prime as a shooting complement to the driving ability of James and Wade, but his ability simply doesn't live up to his name recognition at this point in his career. Because of that, Riley and the Heat can't get wrapped up in the player Arenas once was.
I think that somebody ultimately will take a chance on Arenas in hopes of him returning to his previous form, but due to the number of injuries he has incurred in recent years, I don't envision that happening.
Because of those injuries, Arenas likely doesn't have much time left in the league.
In terms of guards and wing players, the Heat are pretty much set right now, so unless there is a deal to be made for a good interior player, I think they should stand pat. If a good situation pops up then I'm sure Riley will look into it, but there's no reason to pursue Arenas.
