Gilbert Arenas Rumors: New Jersey Nets and The Best Fits For Agent Zero

Eric BallDec 11, 2011

Can I interest you in a 29-year-old free agent that has suffered through multiple knee surgeries and thought it was funny to bring a gun to an NBA locker room a few years ago?

The Orlando Magic have officially said goodbye to combo guard Gilbert Arenas on Sunday, making Agent Zero a free agent according to ESPN's Marc Stein:

That means any team that wants the former All-Star can make him an offer.

The Nets make a lot of sense. Aside from Deron Williams, they have absolutely zero playmakers in the backcourt. Arenas may not have the incredible explosiveness of years past, but he’s still a serviceable guard.

He has transformed into more of a jump shooter that distributes the ball and his stats in 49 games with the Magic reflect as much (eight points, 3.2 assists in 22 minutes of playing time).

The Nets would be able to give him more playing time and the chance to play alongside a point guard that can create open shots for him. The Nets are desperately trying to bring in big name free agents at any position, but are striking out with everyone.

Signing Arenas to a cheap one-year deal will allow the Nets to upgrade at shooting guard over Anthony Morrow without having to make any sort of long term commitment.

Here are two other options for a guy that has averaged 21 points and 5.4 assists in his 10-year career:

Golden State Warriors

The team that drafted him needs another guard to add some depth to the backcourt and Arenas would be a perfect fit in that role. His ability to handle the ball will come in handy while relieving both Monta Ellis and Stephen Curry periodically.

The Warriors just made a huge offer to restricted free agent DeAndre Jordan, so they don’t exactly have a ton of cap space for a big name guard.

Arenas is the right price and the right fit.

Somebody has to score points for this team.

Assuming Chris Paul joins David West and leaves New Orleans, the leading scorer from last year would be Carl Landry at 15.8 a game.

Arenas would essentially just be a body out there for the Hornets to eat up minutes while costing a very reasonable amount. That’ll work.
