NBA Rumors: Don't Expect David West to Remain with New Orleans Hornets
New Orleans Hornets fans need to start preparing for a franchise in rebuilding mode.
With the likelihood that star point guard Chris Paul will be headed out of town, perhaps by the start of the season, that also means longtime forward David West will probably follow his footsteps.
West has already been linked to several teams this season, including the Indiana Pacers, Dallas Mavericks, San Antonio Spurs, Miami Heat, Atlanta Hawks, Golden State Warriors and Washington Wizards.
The reality is, the Hornets aren't going to commit big dollars to a 31-year-old forward with Paul headed out of New Orleans. It would make no sense.
And with no stars remaining on the Hornets, fans can expect a rough 2011-2012, and probably a tough two seasons.
The Hornets finished 46-36 last season, despite having one of the best point guards in the league and a former All-Star in West. Imagine what will happen to them when both of these guys are gone.
In short, the Hornets won't make the playoffs this season.
As for West, it appears now that the Pacers are the most likely destination. They have more money to offer West than the Mavericks, Spurs, Heat and Hawks, and the Warriors and Wizards are longshots.
For Hornets fans, it's going to be tough to lose West. He's played his first eight seasons with the team, garnering two All-Star selections along the way, and he's been a fan favorite based on his work ethic and professionalism. It's no wonder so many playoff contenders are interested in the 31-year-old.
There's still a chance he remains with the team if the Hornets decide to keep Paul, but there's no reason to think that, given Paul obviously wants out and they need to get something for him before he hits free agency in 2012.
