Dallas Cowboys: Why Tony Romo Will Emerge from Bye Week Better Than Ever

Alex HallOct 10, 2011

In many ways, Tony Romo's first four games of 2011 represent the Dallas Cowboys franchise over the new millennium.

Both can be described as a roller coaster, and both seem to let you down just when you start to believe in them.

That being said, Dallas' franchise quarterback will come out of this recent bye week better than ever and taking the Cowboys to the playoffs.

That statement may be a bit bold, but the game against the New England Patriots in Week 6 has the potential to be one of Romo's best this season.

Yes, the Patriots do have Tom Brady, Wes Welker and their dynamic duo of tight ends, but they also have the 32nd ranked defense in the NFL as of Monday. This is subject to change after the Monday Night Football game, but regardless the Pats have struggled on the defensive side of the ball, specifically against the pass.

It's believed that Dallas wide receiver Miles Austin will be back for this game, which is great news for the Eastern Illinois alum quarterback as he'll have both his top wide outs on the field for this important matchup.

Even with Austin and Dez Bryant in and out of the lineup this season, Romo has thrown for less than 300 yards only once this season, his lowest output being 255 against the Washington Redskins. He's also recorded a completion percentage of 60 or above in every game this year, all great numbers to have when you're about to take on the leagues worst defense.

What worries most fans of America's Team are not so much the numbers that their quarterback can rack up on Sundays, it's been the costly turnovers as of late.

The Cowboys currently sit at 2-2, but one could argue they could be undefeated if not for the second half miscues against the New York Jets and Detroit Lions by Romo.

New England currently ranks fourth in the league with seven interceptions to their name, but if there's one thing that Dallas' No.9 has shown in his career, it's that he does his best to correct mistakes.

After fumbling the field goal snap against the Seattle Seahawks in their 2007 playoff game, Romo spent the offseason perfecting his ball holding skills, and it would be a shock to hear he hadn't been trying to control the turnovers during practice for the past week.

Week 6 will be a time for Dallas and their quarterback to not only move ahead in the NFC East division, but to begin ascending to the ranks the stars on their helmets demand by taking down one of the AFC's top powerhouses.
