NFL Power Rankings: Which Team Is Absolute Worst in League?

Ryan PhillipsSep 20, 2011

Week 2 of the 2011 NFL season is now in the books, and already several teams have shown they have no chance to compete this season.

But one franchise has shown itself to be situated at the bottom of the league with two awful performances.

The Kansas City Chiefs have lost their first two games of the season by a combined score of 89-10. A team that went 10-6 last season and won the AFC West has suddenly turned into the laughing stock of the NFL.

In Week 1, the Chiefs were destroyed by the Buffalo Bills, 41-7, while the Detroit Lions smacked them 48-3 this past Sunday. In addition to those results, the Chiefs have also lost arguably their two best players for the season to knee injuries, as both safety Eric Berry and running back Jamaal Charles tore ACLs.

Offensively, the Chiefs have looked hapless, as quarterback Matt Cassel has struggled to get anything going through the air. The USC product has completed 37 of 58 passes (63.8 percent) for 252 yards with one touchdown and four interceptions. His quarterback rating of 50.4 is second-worst in the NFL and his 4.35 yards per attempt ratio is by far the league's worst.

Without Charles, Kansas City's running game looks dead in the water. While backups Dexter McCluster and Thomas Jones have some value, neither is as consistently dangerous as Charles.

Meanwhile, the Chiefs are allowing 44.5 points per game, which is last in the NFL by 14 points. They are also giving up 387.5 total yards per game, which is 24th in the league.

There is not a single meaningful statistical category where the Chiefs look like a solid football team, and with Berry and Charles out for the season, things look extremely bleak. At this point, I don't see anything drastic changing in Kansas City to turn things around.

I sure hope Andrew Luck likes good barbecue.
