MLB 40-Man Rosters: One Player from Each Team We're Excited to See in the Majors
Many big names get their first chance at a major league call-up in September of every season. For both teams in contention and those out of contention, September call-ups provide a large amount of excitement.
Not all players will be brought up on September 1st. Some are in the playoffs with their minor league teams. Others are still recovering from injuries. However, when they do come up, they provide sparks to their respective teams.
Arizona Diamondbacks: Trevor Bauer
1 of 30It is always exciting when a player is drafted and reaches the major leagues in the same season. It seems like Trevor Bauer may do that for the Arizona Diamondbacks this season.
After dominating at UCLA, Bauer has already progressed to Double-A. After three good outings, Bauer ran into a bump into the road, giving up 10 runs in 1.2 innings. However, this should not prevent the Diamondbacks from calling Bauer up later this month.

Atlanta Braves: Julio Teheran
2 of 30Julio Teheran is one of the top two pitching prospects in baseball. He briefly appeared on the Atlanta Braves roster earlier this season but has spent most of the year dominating Triple-A.
Without much left to prove in the minors, Teheran will be getting an early audition for a spot in the rotation next year. He was incredibly fun to watch in the minors and it should be more of the same when he reaches Atlanta in September.
Baltimore Orioles: Josh Bell
3 of 30Josh Bell entered the 2010 season as the 37th best prospect in baseball according to Baseball America. He has not yet lived up to the expectations that come with such a high ranking.
Bell already had 205 major league at-bats but he has yet to be productive. He has spent most of the year at Triple-A and has proved that he is ready for another shot in Baltimore.
Boston Red Sox: Ryan Lavarnway
4 of 30Ryan Lavarnway has managed to show impressive power for a catcher during his minor league career. He garnered a quick call-up to the Red Sox in August but was then sent back down.
In September, Lavarnway will once again be back up in the majors. With a good month, Lavarnway could put himself in a position to be the Red Sox starting catcher on Opening Day next season.
Chicago Cubs: Wellington Castillo
5 of 30Wellington Castillo tops the list of Chicago Cubs potential September call-ups. He had a brief appearance in the majors earlier this year and is looking forward to getting back.
Cubs fans may debate if Castillo should have been called up earlier, but he will get his due in September. He should see a good number of at-bats with the Cubs out of contention.
Chicago White Sox: Dayan Viciedo
6 of 30The Chicago White Sox have struggled to get production from both their third base and DH position this season. This whole time, they have had a player who could make significant contributions in the minors.
Dayan Viciedo was called up during the last few days of August and has already made an impact for the White Sox. Watching him play in September should further prove that he was ready to be called up earlier than he was.
Cincinnati Reds: Edinson Volquez
7 of 30Just a few years ago it looked like Edinson Volquez was on his way to becoming an elite pitcher. In 2009, Volquez was injured and needed Tommy John surgery.
He looks nothing like the pitcher that he was in the past. Volquez struggled earlier this season and was sent down tot he minors. His return will be highly anticipated by Cincinnati Reds fans.
Cleveland Indians: Matt LaPorta
8 of 30Matt LaPorta has had a tough season. He lost his starting job and was demoted to the minor leagues. He should be back in the majors soon.
LaPorta has dominated the minors during his time down there. There are some that think that LaPorta may be a AAAA player and he doesn't have much more time to prove them wrong.
Colorado Rockies: Ian Stewart
9 of 30For years, Ian Stewart was one of the game's top prospect. It looked like he would have the Colorado Rockies' third base position locked down for a long time.
However, Stewart has struggled to hit for a good average while he has been in the majors. He has spent most of the season in the minors and has done fairly well. He should be back up in September and could work his way back towards a spot on the Rockies' major league roster.
Detroit Tigers: Jacob Turner
10 of 30Jacob Turner has flown through the minors and has already made his first major league start at the ripe young age of 20. He will have many more to come.
This September fans will be able to see a few more starts from Turner and find out what all of the hype has been about.
Florida Marlins: Chris Coghlan
11 of 30Chris Coghlan has struggled to find consistent success at the major league level since his Rookie of the Year season in 2009. He has had struggles in Triple-A this season after he was sent down.
The Florida Marlins will likely bring Coghlan back up to the majors after rosters have expanded to allow 40 players. He should see some playing time and could be given a chance to win back his job.
Houston Astros: Jordan Lyles
12 of 30Jacob Turner was not the only 20-year-old who made his first start in the majors this year. Jordan Lyles has actually made 15 starts for the Houston Astros this year.
However, it was fairly obvious that Lyles was not ready for the challenges of the major leagues. He was sent back down to the minors and has begun to see success again. Lyles should pitch out of the Astros' bullpen in September.
Kansas City Royals: Clint Robinson
13 of 30Kansas City Royals fans were dying for the organization to call up Kila Ka'aihue after he tore apart the minors a few years ago. The Royals did and he could not produce in the majors.
Now fans believe that Clint Robinson deserves a chance. He is 26-years-old but he has been dominant in the minors. He has hit over .300 each of the past two years and has shown 20+ home run power.
Los Angeles Angels: Loek Van Mil
14 of 30At the moment, John Rauch holds the record for being the tallest player in MLB history at 6' 11". However, his record will be broken should the Los Angeles Angels call up Loek Van Mil this September.
Van Mil, whose full name is Ludovicus Jacobus Maria Van Mil, is 7' 1". He is a reliever in the Angels organization and has an ERA under 2.00 for the team's Triple-A affiliate.
Los Angeles Dodgers: Jerry Sands
15 of 30Like many of the other players on this list, Jerry Sands is a player who has already appeared in the majors this year. Sands was given a chance for 41 games earlier this season but struggled.
In the minors, he has had nothing but success this year. He is a threat with a bat in his hands and he has a sweet power stroke.
Milwaukee Brewers: Mat Gamel
16 of 30If he was with another organization, Mat Gamel more than likely would have been called up to the majors and given an extended look already this season. He has absolutely dominated Triple-A pitching all year.
The Milwaukee Brewers have not been able to find a spot for Gamel in their lineup. They may have some at-bats for him in September and it should be interesting to see how his minor league production translates to the majors.
Minnesota Twins: Joe Benson
17 of 30The Minnesota Twins may lose both Jason Kubel and Michael Cuddyer to free agency after this season. They will be looking for a replacement and might be able to find one internally.
Joe Benson will get a chance to show the Twins why he deserves the job this September. If he preforms well, the team may not go out and sign a free agent to take the spot and it could be Benson's job to lose.

New York Mets: Jordany Valdespin
18 of 30Jordany Valdespin has had a breakout year for the New York Mets this year. He has shown that he can hit for both power and average. Valdespin also has the ability to steal bases.
With the Mets uncertain about who will be there second baseman next year, there is certainly an opportunity for Valdespin to give management to keep his name in the discussion. He is one of the Mets top potential September call-ups.
New York Yankees: Jesus Montero
19 of 30The New York Yankees have already announced that they will be bring Jesus Montero up in September. His bat will be a welcomed addition to their lineup.
Montero highlights the list of players who may get called up by the Yankees this season. If he does well, he should be in New York full time next season.
Oakland Athletics: Michael Taylor
20 of 30Michael Taylor's 2009 season propelled him to top prospect status, and was a big reason why he was included in the Roy Halladay deal. Taylor has failed to match that production since then.
This season, Taylor has played well enough that he will likely get a call-up from the Oakland Athletics. It will be the first time that the 25-year-old has gotten to face major league pitching.
Philadelphia Phillies: Domonic Brown
21 of 30The Philadelphia Phillies believed that Domonic Brown would be able to handle the major leagues this season. They were wrong and eventually had to go out and acquire Hunter Pence.
Brown will get another chance at playing for the Phillies this September. He has begun to regain his form in the minors and should look to duplicate his success against major league pitching.
Pittsburgh Pirates: Pedro Alvarez
22 of 30Pedro Alvarez originally looked like he was going to play a major role in the Pittsburgh Pirates future. However, after his struggles, it appears that this may no longer be the case.
Alvarez is still young, but he has had major struggles with plate discipline. He has struck out in almost 30 percent of his at-bats during his career which has had a very negative impact on his batting average.
San Diego Padres: Anthony Rizzo
23 of 30Anthony Rizzo does play for the San Diego Padres' Triple-A affiliate in the Pacific Coast League, one that is know for being a hitter's haven, but that does not diminish his accomplishments.
Rizzo has been absolutely dominant in the minors. This led the Padres to give him a 35-day trial in the majors, during which he failed mightily. Rizzo will get more opportunities in the majors during September.
San Francisco Giants: Eric Surkamp
24 of 30Eric Surkamp or should I say SurKKKamp was absolutely dominant in at Double-A this year. He is known for his ability to strike out hitters and his impressive control.
The San Francisco Giants called Surkamp up during the last days of August to make his first major league start. He will get a few more chances to match his talents against major league hitters this season.
Seattle Mariners: Alex Liddi
25 of 30Alex Liddi has tried to hit his way on to the Seattle Mariners' 25-man roster. Now that it is September, he should finally see some playing time.
Liddi has shown his power for a few years in the minors and once he appears in a game he will be the first Italian position player to play in the MLB.
St. Louis Cardinals: Zack Cox
26 of 30The St. Louis Cardinals are fighting to stay in the race for the NL Central title but with every passing day it appears less and less likely that they will make the playoffs.
In September, almost all of the attention in St. Louis will be on Albert Pujols since his time with the Cardinals could be ending soon. Zack Cox will not get much attention when he is called up because of this, but he has the potential to be a very good player.
Tampa Bay Rays: Matt Moore
27 of 30According to many, Matt Moore has overtaken Julio Teheran as the best pitcher in the minors. While the Tampa Bay Rays are normally cautious with their young pitchers, Moore could get a September call-up.
He has shown an amazing ability to strike out hitters in the minors. Moore is not currently on the Rays 40-man roster but they could easily add him if they are going to promote him.
Texas Rangers: Leonys Martin
28 of 30When the Texas Rangers placed Nelson Cruz on the disabled list they called up Leonys Martin. He has the potential to play a big role in the AL West playoff race.
Martin is known for his outstanding defense and speed. He could wreak havoc on the basepaths and help the Rangers make the playoffs for the second straight year.
Toronto Blue Jays: Dustin McGowan
29 of 30Dustin McGowan has worked incredibly hard to put himself in a position for a September call-up this year. He last pitched in the majors in 2008 and has been working hard to come back from injuries.
McGowan twice has had season ending surgery, one of them being rotator cuff surgery. After missing the 2009 and 2010 season, McGowan has pitched well in the minors. His 2011 debut should be celebrated.
Washington Nationals: Stephen Strasburg
30 of 30For the second-year in a row, Stephen Strasburg's debut will be the most anticipated start of the year. Last season Strasburg dazzled viewers with his incredible 14-strikeout performance.
Unfortunately, Strasburg's season was cut short when he tore his UCL and needed Tommy John surgery. He has been rolling through the minors during his rehab stint and on September 6th, a year after the surgery, he will be back on the mound for the Washington Nationals.
