FC Bayern Munich Special: Unruly Fans, Haiti, Wolfsburg, and Lots More.
I am calling this article a "special" edition as I have plenty to say about "Der Club" to everybody. The Bayern supporters and players are currently looking forward to the "Nord- Sud" (North-South) derby against Werder Bremen this Saturday. However, it's not time for a preview—not just yet.
"Hilfe fur Haiti"
Bayern have decided to provide financial help to disaster-struck Haiti. The recent earthquakes have left the country absolutely battered. Automobile company "Audi" are one of Bayern's sponsors while "Volkswagon" own VfL Wolfsburg. The two companies decided to organize a friendly between their clubs to raise funds for Haiti. The aim is to raise a fund of one million euros. A fixed date is yet to be set for the match. The money has already been transferred to Haiti.
Wing back Marcel Schafer of Wolfsburg and Miro Klose spoke about the disaster:
"We at VfL Wolfsburg were also deeply affected by this tragedy", said Marcel Schafer. He added that any additional revenues would be added to the total sum of money.
Miro Klose said: "Naturally, we’ve also seen the tragic pictures and were ready to help straight away.
The German National Team has decided to donate a sum of €150,000. Schalke has extended a large helping hand by donating a cheque of $100,000. The club has also arranged a friendly match against the Caribbean island's national team. Koln collected donations in their last Bundesliga match. They donated a total of €10,000.
Bayer Leverkusen has donated €50,000 and have said they will donate more in the near future, while Monchengladbach has announced the money raised from ticket sales in their next home game against Bremen will be sent to Haiti. Their target is to raise €200,000. Even second division clubs such as Arminia Bielefeld will be donating money at this time of need.
81 Fans Banned
Bayern haven't decided to ban their fans, the German Football Federation has. The ban is only in place for the home match against Mainz. Bayern played Mainz in the Bundesliga in the early matchdays of the Bundesliga.
They lost the match 2-1. Three officers were injured at a railway station in Mainz following clashes after the match. Out of the 81 fans, 22 are currently under investigation for charges of "assault and breach of peace."
Philipp Lahm and Arjen Robben
The Bayern website recently published a "clear up the air" article about the two. Philipp Lahm and Arjen Robben talked the matter through with each other and decided to forget it and move on. Both addressed Wednesday's press conference and talked about the incident.
“We were really going for it in training five-a-side, and these things often happen. But we talked it through afterwards and moved on,” said Lahm.
“It’s not a problem any more. We shook hands afterwards and embraced. Philipp is a teammate and friend,” said Robben.
"I Am the best."
Miro Klose has discovered his scoring form again. He got on the score sheet in the match against Hoffenheim as well as in the friendly against Basel, something his fellow strikers Mario Gomez and Ivica Olic failed to do. According to Miro Klose, when he is fit, he is the best, and I wouldn't argue with his opinion.
If Klose's words are to go by, Louis Van Gaal will have a selction headache sooner than expected. In 2002, prior to the World Cup, Klose finished the Bundesliga season with 16 goals to his name. He became the top scorer of the Bundesliga in 2006, prior to the World Cup, a tournament where he also took the top scorer's award. If these records are anything to go by, this year looks likely to be a great one for Klose.
Klose should be fired up for the next game which is against his former club, Werder. However, if I was Louis Van Gaal, I wouldn't necessarily give him a starting spot just yet. I would wait for a few matches.
To finish it all off, Louis Van Gaal gave his team a day off on Tuesday. Bastian Schweinsteiger decided to star for a commercial and ended up breaking the equipment amidst a lot of laughter.
