More silverware heading back to Paris

Goals from Désiré Doué and Khvicha Kvaratskhelia saw Paris Saint-Germain retain the UEFA Super Cup in a 2-1 victory over Aston Villa.

A youthful Villa attack will likely look back on the game with some regrets after arguably creating the better chances, but as has so often been the case over the last two seasons, PSG's star power proved to be the difference.

After a slow opening 20 minutes, Kvaratskhelia brought the game to life, gaining a yard of separation from Matty Cash and smashing the ball into the net before goalkeeper Marco Bizot could react.

Villa reacted well, though, with striker Brian Madjo a consistent problem for PSG while registering six attempts on goal. The 17-year-old sent two headers wide and hit the post when bearing down on goal, but he redeemed himself on the stroke of half-time, volleying home John McGinn's cross after battling with defender Willian Pacho.

Villa's assault on the PSG goal continued after the break, and Madjo almost turned provider in setting up McGinn to test goalkeeper Matvey Safonov.

Just after the hour mark, though, Unai Emery's side's wastefulness in front of goal was punished when Doué ran onto Ousmane Dembélé's pass and expertly placed the ball into the far corner. The Frenchman was initially flagged offside, but video review showed that Cash was playing him onside.

Villa continued to create chances, but a Safonov save from George Hemmings and a heroic Warren Zaïre-Emery block when João Gomes looked poised to equalize helped PSG stand firm and retain another European trophy.

Very close offside no call there as Doué finishes

A late equalizer from 17-year-old striker Brian Madjo saw Aston Villa go into half-time level with UEFA Champions League winners Paris Saint-Germain.

John McGinn's deep cross found the young forward, who outmuscled Willian Pacho to volley home in the 45th minute.

Madjo was one of two teenagers included in the starting lineup against a PSG team almost at full strength, with Ousmane Dembélé the most notable missing name, and that gap in star quality became clear after 20 minutes.

Désiré Doué found Khvicha Kvaratskhelia on the left side of the penalty area, and in the blink of an eye the Georgian had cut onto his right foot and rifled the ball past Marco Bizot in the Aston Villa goal.

Villa grew into the game, though, and Madjo got on the end of several chances before his equalizer. Eight minutes after Kvaratskhelia's opener, the youngster's header from another excellent McGinn cross flew just wide. Madjo then saw a second effort fly just wide of Matvey Safonov's post 11 minutes before half-time, and then misdirected another header six minutes later before finally hitting the mark.
