Tre Jones' Draft Scouting Report: Pro Comparison, Updated Spurs Roster
The San Antonio Spurs bolstered their backcourt with a high-profile selection at the 2020 NBA draft. San Antonio selected Duke guard Tre Jones with the No. 41 overall pick Wednesday, meaning he will join his brother Tyus, who is a guard for the Memphis Grizzlies, in the NBA.
Bleacher Report Draft Expert Jonathan Wasserman's Scouting Report
Player: Tre Jones
Position: PG
Height: 6'3"
Weight: 185 lbs
Pro Comparison: Cory Joseph
Scouting Report: Tre Jones is built to manage a second unit with his passing IQ and toughness at both ends. And he made a promising jump last season with his pull-up and scoring skills. Still, his ability to run offense and pressure opposing ball-handlers should be enough to keep the NBA paychecks coming for years.
Here is a look at how Jones fits in with the rest of his new team's roster:
DeMar DeRozan, SG: $27.8M (2021)
LaMarcus Aldridge, PF: $25M (2021)
Rudy Gay, SF: $16M (2021)
Dejounte Murray, PG: $16M (2024)
Patty Mills, PG: $12M (2021)
Trey Lyles, PF: $5.5M (2021)
Luka Samanic, PF: $2.8M (2023)
Lonnie Walker IV, SG: $2.7M (2022)
Derrick White, PG: $2.1M (2021)
Keldon Johnson, SF: $2M (2023)
Chimezie Metu, PF: $1.3M (2021)
Devin Vassell, SF: Rookie scale contract (2024)
Tre Jones, PG: Rookie scale contract (2024)
Bryn Forbes, SG: UFA
Drew Eubanks, C: RFA
Jakob Poeltl, C: RFA

Quinndary Weatherspoon, SG: RFA
Given his brother's pedigree and the fact that Jones arrived at Duke as a 5-star prospect and the No. 3 point guard in the class of 2018, per 247Sports' composite rankings, it seemed like only a matter of time until he reached the NBA.
He was largely a floor general for the 2018-19 Blue Devils alongside Zion Williamson, RJ Barrett and Cam Reddish and finished with 9.4 points, 5.3 assists, 3.8 rebounds and 1.9 steals per game while making sure his talented teammates saw enough shots as a facilitator.
After that trio departed for the NBA, Jones became more of an offensive leader as a sophomore.
He averaged 16.2 points, 6.4 assists, 4.2 rebounds and 1.8 steals per game in 2019-20 and surely bolstered his NBA stock when he improved his three-point percentage from 26.2 as a freshman to 36.1 in his second and final collegiate season.
Jones was also an impressive defender, often tasked with guarding the opponent's best ball-handler, and accepted a leadership role on the pressure-packed stage that Duke presents.
Bleacher Report's Jonathan Wasserman projected Jones as the No. 28 overall pick in a May mock draft, pointing to his "passing IQ and ability to pressure opposing ball-handlers on defense" while also highlighting his improvements as a shooter.
If he can continue making strides from the outside while facilitating for his teammates and providing defensive pressure, Jones should find a role in his new team's backcourt during his rookie campaign.
