Report: Jerry West Agrees to New Contract to Remain Clippers Consultant
The Los Angeles Clippers are keeping The Logo in-house. Jerry West agreed to a new contract to continue as the franchise's consultant, according to Shams Charania of The Athletic and Stadium.
West joined the Clippers front office in June 2017 after serving as an executive board member for the Golden State Warriors since 2011.
"Here I am on the last adventure of my life," West said at his introductory press conference in 2017.
The 80-year-old Hall of Famer seems to have meant it as he stays committed to the franchise.
The Clippers have also retained general manager Michael Winger and assistant general manager Trent Redden this offseason, even though both men were wooed by other franchises.
West, in particular, is an interesting asset for the Clippers in present-day L.A., as he spent his entire playing career with the crosstown Lakers, who may now be secondary to the Clippers in the Hollywood market. Heading into an important free-agency period, keeping a cohesive front office could give the Clippers an edge over a seemingly fractured Lakers organization.
Additionally, the Clippers might have bolstered themselves in the eyes of free agents by exceeding preseason expectations. The roster lacked a true superstar and traded away an integral piece in Tobias Harris at the February deadline, but head coach Doc Rivers still led them to a 48-34 regular season and a postseason berth.
While they lost 4-2 to the Golden State Warriors in the first round of the playoffs, 2018-19 was still a resounding win for the franchise.ย
With the same pieces in tact from a coaching and front office standpoint moving forward, the Clippers will look to take the next step toward contention.
