Brett Brown Says Contract Situation Will 'Unfold as It Should'

Philadelphia 76ers head coach Brett Brown said on Friday he's yet to have lengthy discussions with general manager Bryan Colangelo regarding a contract extension, but he thinks the negotiation process will "unfold as it should," according to The Athletic's Rich Hoffman. 

Colangelo later confirmed he plans to meet with Brown over the offseason. 

"It's my intention to sit down with him and discuss a contract extension for him," he said, according to The Athletic's Derek Bodner. "I don't think it's the healthiest situation for a coach to go into a season with one year left on their contract."

Brown, 57, has one year remaining on his contract after agreeing to a two-year extension in December 2015 that locked him up through the end of the 2018-19 season. 

A former assistant under Gregg Popovich with the San Antonio Spurs, Brown joined the Sixers in 2013 as they dove headfirst into a burdensome rebuild championed by former general manager Sam Hinkie. 

The Sixers went 47-199 over Brown's first three years on the job before making incremental strides and logging a record of 28-54 two seasons ago. 

Things finally came together this past season with center Joel Embiid and 2016 No. 1 overall pick Ben Simmons at full strength. By year's end, the Sixers blew away expectations and finished with the third-best record in the Eastern Conference at 52-30. 

Philadelphia defeated the Miami Heat, 4-1, in the first round of the playoffs for its first postseason series victory since 2012 before bowing out to the Boston Celtics in the second round. 

With two franchise cornerstones, cap space and a quality culture in place, the Sixers aren't thinking about anything other than rings at this point. 

"We're here to win a championship," Brown said, according to PhillyVoice's Kyle Neubeck. "That's the only thing that drives me when I pull up to my spot outside. Our timeline has changed, our expectations have changed, and that's a good thing."
