LeBron James Talks Being 1st Player to Have 30K Points, 8K Rebounds, 8K Assists
After becoming the first player in NBA history with at least 30,000 points, 8,000 rebounds and 8,000 assists in his career, Cleveland Cavaliers superstar LeBron James commented on the accomplishment Tuesday.
According to ESPN.com's Dave McMenamin, James discussed his satisfaction with being able to contribute in myriad ways over an extended period:
"With the long list of so many great players that have come through this league, in the history of this league, for me to be the only [person] in a category, I think it's pretty cool. It's pretty cool. I take pride in my game. I've always taken pride in being a triple threat since I started playing basketball, and I never wanted to be labeled as a scorer.
"I always wanted to be labeled as just an all-around basketball player; and I get more gratification out of the assists more than anything, because to get my guys great looks or they're knocking down shots, that means a lot to me."
James reached the feat during Tuesday's 129-123 win over the Brooklyn Nets, finishing with 31 points, 12 rebounds and 11 assists.
LeBron further reflected on becoming a member of an exclusive club on Instagram:
The 33-year-old James is enjoying another MVP-caliber season with per-game averages of 26.7 points, 9.0 assists and 8.4 rebounds on 54.5 percent shooting.
James credited his teammates with helping him play at such a high level recently:
"I'm just playing some good ball, and the most consistent thing for me right now is I'm available out there on the floor for my teammates. They give me the room to go out and do what I need to do to help them as much as I can. And for me to have the month of February, when I averaged a triple-double for the first time in my career, I'm just trying to make plays, get rebounds and also try to score the ball a little bit as well. So, I would say for me individually, it was a pretty good month."
LeBron and the Cavs have been much improved since the trade deadline, which saw general manager Koby Altman make wholesale changes in acquiring Jordan Clarkson, Larry Nance Jr., Rodney Hood and George Hill.
Cleveland is 5-2 since the deadline. And at 35-24, the Cavs are holding onto the No. 3 seed in the Eastern Conference, with a half-game lead over the Washington Wizards.
James and the Cavs will look to keep their momentum going Thursday when they host the Philadelphia 76ers.
