Knicks Rumors: New York Progressing Toward Contract Talks with David Griffin
ESPN's Adrian Wojnarowski and Ramona Shelburne reported Saturday that the New York Knicks are progressing toward contract talks with David Griffin.
Per the report, Griffin has met with the Knicks on multiple occasions, and the expectation is that he is in line to be offered the general manager position with Steve Mills moving to president of basketball operations.
The team president role was vacated when the Knicks and Phil Jackson mutually agreed to part ways this offseason.
Griffin did not come to terms on a new contract with the Cleveland Cavaliers this offseason despite shaping a roster that helped them reach each of the past three NBA Finals, including a championship in 2016.
Per Wojnarowski and Shelburne, Griffin is expected to meet with Knicks owner James Dolan soon, and he will be the primary personnel decision-maker if he gets the job.
They also reported, however, that reluctance within the Knicks organization to make significant changes to the front office could make Griffin hesitant to join due to the potential desire to bring some trusted executives and scouts with him to New York.
The Knicks are seemingly in desperate need of a shakeup after struggling mightily throughout Jackson's tenure.
In Jackson's three full seasons at the helm, New York lost at least 50 games three times, and it hasn't reached the playoffs since 2012-13.
The Knicks do have some promising young pieces in place, though, including forward Kristaps Porzingis, center Willy Hernangomez and 2017 first-round draft pick Frank Ntilikina.
New York also surprisingly signed Atlanta Hawks restricted free agent Tim Hardaway Jr. to a four-year, $71 million offer sheet that Atlanta won't match, according to Wojnarowski.
Griffin's opinion on the Hardaway deal isn't known, but Wojnarowski and Shelburne reported Mills made the decision to sign him.
