Bill Belichick Named Potential Witness in Aaron Hernandez's Double-Murder Trial

Joseph ZuckerFeb 22, 2017

New England Patriots head coach Bill Belichick may be compelled to testify in Aaron Hernandez's double-murder trial.

NBC Connecticut's Marc Fortier reported Wednesday that Hernandez's defense attorneys listed Belichick, Patriots offensive coordinator Josh McDaniels and Mike and Maurkice Pouncey as potential witnesses. Belichick and McDaniels coached Hernandez while he played in New England, and the Pouncey brothers were his teammates on the Florida Gators.

A Massachusetts jury found Hernandez guilty of first-degree murder in April 2015 in the death of Odin Lloyd. As a result of the verdict, the 27-year-old received a life sentence without the possibility of parole.

Hernandez is standing trial for the alleged shootings of Daniel de Abreu and Safiro Furtado in 2012. Prosecutors allege Hernandez and a friend followed the men after de Abreu spilled a drink on Hernandez at a nightclub. According to authorities, Hernandez then shot them while they were in their vehicle, per the Associated Press (h/t the Guardian).

The Boston Globe's Travis Andersen reported the presiding judge granted Hernandez's defense team a delay of over two weeks to prepare and the trial is expected to begin next Wednesday.
