Super Bowl Champion Denver Broncos Visit President Barack Obama at White House

Timothy RappJun 6, 2016

The Denver Broncos visited the White House and President Barack Obama on Monday to commemorate their 24-10 victory over the Carolina Panthers in Super Bowl 50.

The president praised the team's season and received a No. 44 jersey from the Broncos:

The team also gave him a signed helmet, per Adam Kinney of BSNDenver.com:

"On and off the field, these guys are champs," Obama said in his comments to the team, per the NFL Network broadcast. "Apparently, John Elway knows what he's doing."

He also borrowed Peyton Manning's signature audible, per Jesse Byrnes of The Hill:

As he often does at these events, the president also took the moment to offer a few playful jabs at some of the team's stars.

First came Von Miller, per Troy Renck of the Denver Post:

Then he jokingly called Brandon McManus the "heart and soul, the horsepower of the offense," per Renck, teasing the Broncos' 19th-ranked scoring offense.

And finally, he had a bit of fun at Manning's expense:

He also revealed that while talking to Manning in the White House about retirement, Manning joked that the president should try it, per the NFL Network's broadcast. Obama laughed, noting his retirement was going to be a bit forced as he comes to the close of his second term in office.

Before Obama addressed the team, the Broncos took a tour of the White House. The team's Instagram page showed the players filing in:

Elway, the Broncos' executive vice president of football operations and general manager, also posted from Washington, D.C.:

Many of the team's departed players joined in the proceedings, including David Bruton, Ryan Harris, Ryan Clady, Danny Trevathan, Aaron Brewer, Vernon Davis and Tyler Polumbus, according to Lindsay Jones of USA Today.

Manning joined Miller and Demaryius Thomas for a picture, per the team's wide receivers coach, Tyke Tolbert:

One player from the championship team who wasn't present was quarterback Brock Osweiler, who signed with the Houston Texans in the offseason. He released the following statement last week about his decision to pass on the visit to the White House, per Eric Edholm of Yahoo Sports:

"

The Broncos graciously extended an invitation for me to join them at The White House on Monday, but due to a scheduled OTA in Houston, I feel it is important to be at practice with my new teammates. It's a new offensive system for me and every practice and rep is extremely important. I am very appreciative of the Broncos wanting to include me on this special day.

"

His head coach, Bill O'Brien, confirmed that neither he nor the organization had any say in Osweiler's decision, per Deepi Sidhu of Texans Radio:

O'Brien likely appreciates Osweiler's commitment to his new team, however.

The Broncos will have their work cut out for them as they look to return to the White House next year to meet the country's next president. With uncertainty at quarterback—Mark Sanchez is the best option at the position—and a number of players from the championship team now wearing new uniforms, the 2016 Broncos have more than a few questions to answer.

The core of the roster is still solid, and it appears as though Elway knows what he's doing. Another trip to the White House isn't out of the question for Denver. But the road to Washington, D.C., has gotten bumpier for the Broncos this offseason.
