Terry Stotts, Trail Blazers Agree on New Contract: Latest Details and Reaction
The Portland Trail Blazers and head coach Terry Stotts agreed to a contract extension Monday, announced the team.
“I am very pleased that we were able to agree on a contract extension and look forward to continuing the progress that we have made,” said Stotts, per NBA.com. “As an organization, we have developed a culture and continuity that is exciting to be a part of, and I could not be more appreciative of the players and coaching staff."
Adrian Wojnarowski of The Vertical first broke the news.
"The Blazers exercised the team option on the final year of Stotts' original contract for the 2016-17 season, and the three-year extension will start in 2017 and run through the 2020 season, league sources said," Wojnarowski wrote.
Sam Amick of USA Today noted the annual average of the deal is $5 million, per a source.
Stotts, 58, has gone 182-146 in his four seasons with the team and led the Blazers to the postseason in three consecutive years. Despite losing LaMarcus Aldridge in free agency to the San Antonio Spurs and trading Nicolas Batum to the Charlotte Hornets, the Blazers surprised the rest of the NBA this season by finishing 44-38 and earning the Western Conference's No. 5 seed in the postseason.
They beat an injury-riddled Los Angeles Clippers team in the first round before falling to the defending champion Golden State Warriors in the second round.
Stotts finished second in the Coach of the Year voting behind Golden State's Steve Kerr, who won the award after his team completed the regular season at 73-9, the best record in NBA history.
Stotts had brief stints with the Atlanta Hawks (2002-04) and the Milwaukee Bucks (2005-07) and was also an assistant coach with the Seattle Supersonics, Bucks, Hawks, Warriors and Dallas Mavericks before taking over the lead role in Portland in 2012.
He got the most out of his team in 2015-16, led by superstar Damian Lillard and burgeoning stud C.J. McCollum. With a star backcourt and a contract extension for Stotts in place, the Blazers can continue aggressively building a championship roster.
And with Stotts proving over his four years that he can get the most out of the talent in front of him, the Blazers look like a power in the making in the West.
