Cleveland Cavaliers Tie NBA Postseason Record with 20 Made 3-Pointers
In their 107-90 Game 2 win over the Detroit Pistons on Wednesday night, the Cleveland Cavaliers tied an NBA playoff record with 20 made three-pointers in the game, via the NBA.
The Cavaliers had eight different players knock down a shot from distance as they took a 2-0 series lead.
J.R. Smith led the Cavaliers' assault from long distance by going 7-of-11 from three, which provided all of his 21 points on the night.
The NBA showed one of his buckets, which the Cavs created by making the extra pass:
Smith spoke with Fox Sports Ohio after the game:
Kyrie Irving added four more threes, Kevin Love sunk three and LeBron James, who led all scorers with 27 points, added a pair.
Only two other teams in NBA history have hit 20 three-pointers in a playoff game.
The 2011 Dallas Mavericks did so in the Western Conference Semifinals against the Los Angeles Lakers in a 122-86 victory.
It punched their ticket to a Western Conference Finals matchup with the Oklahoma City Thunder, which they won on the way to their only NBA title. Jason Terry led Dallas with nine three-pointers that day.
In 1996, the Seattle SuperSonics needed all 20 of their three-pointers in a 105-101 victory in Game 2 of the Western Conference Semifinals against the Houston Rockets.
Nate McMillan hit five threes, while Gary Payton and Hersey Hawkins contributed three apiece. A 64-win team, the Sonics made it to the NBA Finals but lost to the legendary 72-10 Chicago Bulls in six games.
If history suggests anything, then this is a good omen for the Cavaliers.
With this kind of distribution of scoring and the lack of parity in the East, the Cavaliers look like they'll be unstoppable in conference play.
