Steve Kerr Comments on Warriors' Pursuit of Bulls Record, NBA Championship
Coming off their first home loss in 54 games, the Golden State Warriors now have to win five of their last six games to break the 1995-96 Chicago Bulls' 72-10 record.
Warriors head coach Steve Kerr, who was on that record-setting Bulls team, seems more focused on having his team ready to win a second consecutive NBA title when asked about the possibility of 73 wins, per Marcus Thompson of the Bay Area News Group:
Following Golden State's eighth loss of the season, Kerr is starting to sound more like San Antonio Spurs head coach Gregg Popovich.
Even though the Spurs don't have a shot at setting a single-season wins record this season, they have already set an NBA record with a 38-0 record at home this year. After his team set that mark with a 100-92 win over New Orleans, Popovich was not enthused about it, per Jeff McDonald of the San Antonio Express-News:
Kerr, just like Popovich, is not prone to getting excited over things that ultimately don't have an impact on the ultimate prize. If the Warriors win 73 games during the regular season but fall short of winning a title, what do all those wins mean?
Thinking about Kerr's comments on 73 wins, he could pull a Popovich and start resting some of his players to get ready for the playoffs. He did tell Monte Poole of Comcast SportsNet Bay Area earlier in the week the Warriors were "not changing anything," but did add "if we need to rest somebody, we will."
The Warriors still have two games remaining against San Antonio, but Spurs guard Tony Parker said on his radio show (via News 4 San Antonio) that he's not expecting Popovich to play any of their key players in those matchups. They also have two games left against Memphis and single games against Portland and Minnesota to break the record.
It's not an easy schedule, as Minnesota is the only non-playoff team in the bunch, but the Warriors have given no indication they intend to take a night off. They are healthy and still playing at a high level, despite Friday's loss against the Boston Celtics, so the regular-season brass ring remains in play.
