Ryan Mallett Reportedly Signing with Baltimore Ravens
Free-agent quarterback Ryan Mallett reportedly will get another shot to continue his NFL career after being released by the Houston Texans on Oct. 27.
Dianna Marie Russini of ESPN reported Mallett will sign with the Baltimore Ravens, citing sources.
The news comes after Zac Jackson of Pro Football Talk, citing a source, reported earlier in the day that the Cincinnati Bengals contacted Mallett after Andy Dalton's thumb injury.
Mallett originally worked out for the Ravens on Dec. 2 after Joe Flacco's season-ending knee injury, per Aaron Wilson of the Houston Chronicle.
Baltimore lost Flacco to a torn ACL and MCL in Week 11 and rolled with veteran Matt Schaub under center in his place. Mallett would provide the Ravens with insurance as a backup alongside Matt Schaub and Jimmy Clausen. Schaub is currently dealing with a chest injury that kept him out of a Week 14 meeting with Seattle.
Mallett was cut for missing the Texans' charter plane before Week 7's loss to the Miami Dolphins after the strapping, cannon-armed signal-caller failed to outplay Brian Hoyer. Even when Hoyer went out with a concussion, the Texans opted to bring T.J. Yates aboard instead of a talented quarterback who was with the team during training camp.
There's no denying Mallett's talent, but apparent maturity issues and instances of tardiness have prevented him from having a shot at a full-time starting job. He's registered a woeful 62.7 career passer rating with five touchdowns, seven interceptions, a completion percentage of 53.1 and 5.25 yards per pass attempt.
