LeBron James Holds Players-Only Meeting After Cavaliers vs. Raptors
LeBron James and James Jones reportedly led a players-only meeting Wednesday night after the Cleveland Cavaliers lost to the Toronto Raptors, 103-99, according to Dave McMenamin of ESPN.com.
The pair reportedly questioned the mental toughness of the team, something James did more subtly in his postgame comments.
"It's all mindset," the frustrated superstar noted, per McMenamin. "It comes from within. I've always had it; my upbringing had me like that. It's either you got it or you don't."
It was the team's fourth loss against Eastern Conference foes this season, though head coach David Blatt cited fatigue and a thin rotation.
"I thought that we got tired for obvious reasons. Very short-handed. Thought our guys played hard and I thought we ran out of gas," Blatt said. "I thought fatigue played a big part of that, I really did."
James wasn't interested in any excuses, however, refusing to blame fatigue or injuries for the team's play.
Jones concurred, citing a pattern of play for the Cavaliers early this season.
"It's indicative of how we've been playing all year," he told McMenamin. "We haven't been consistent. We haven't been playing to the level of physicality and with the sense of urgency that we need to, that we set out to maintain."
It's been a frustrating week for James, who also earned a technical foul in the team's win over the Atlanta Hawks on Saturday after he substituted himself out of the game in frustration and left the Cavs with only four players on the court.
Despite his frustrations, however, the Cavs remain 11-4 and atop the Central Division standings. Still, this Cavs team has already won the Eastern Conference Finals. The goal now is to win an NBA title, and players like James and Jones are looking to instill a mentality of seeking perfection each night to obtain that goal.
With last year's champions, the Golden State Warriors, remaining undefeated, perfection might be required to unseat the Warriors this season.
