Pistons Hopeful Pope Is Ready for Start of the Season

The shooting guard figures to play another key role for the Pistons this season. According to RotoWire (via CBS Sports), the team will "likely" be cautious moving forward in the preseason so he will be ready for the Oct. 27 regular-season opener at the Atlanta Hawks. Aaron McMann of MLive Media Group reported that Pistons' head coach Stan Van Gundy said Pope will undergo and MRI Thursday.
Caldwell-Pope scored eight points Wednesday in 10 minutes on 3-of-6 shooting before exiting the game. The third-year shooting guard out of the University of Georgia started all 82 games last season for Detroit, averaging 12.7 points and 3.1 rebounds. He also was tied for second on the team with 1.13 steals per game.
If Caldwell-Pope does happen to miss any time, Jodie Meeks—a six-year veteran who has averaged 9.9 points per game in his career and listed as second on the team's depth chart—could see extended minutes. Meeks played 26 minutes against the Hornets and scored eight points while dishing out two assists.
