John Cena Must Use Open Challenge at WWE Hell in a Cell 2015 to Build New Star

Donald WoodOct 23, 2015

Hey, John Cena! It’s time to put over a new star.

When Cena takes the ring Sunday at the 2015 edition of WWE’s Hell in a Cell pay-per-view, he will be defending the Unites States title in an open challenge. During the match, the champion must use the opportunity to build a Superstar of the future.

According to Dave Meltzer of Wrestling Observer Newsletter, Cena is taking off several weeks following Hell in a Cell for personal reasons. If this report is true, dropping the U.S. title before he leaves could potentially create a star if booked correctly.

Cena and the U.S. title are two of the hottest commodities in the company, and giving that momentum to a talent who desperately needs it could elevate another wrestler in a way that few other situations can.

When Cena does go away for time off, he doesn’t need to hold the championship. Having the face of the company lose may not be what WWE wants, but the time away from wrestling will make most fans forget about the loss anyway.

Losing once may be no big deal for Cena, but a victory over a star the magnitude of Cena could make a young star’s career forever.

A fresh face or a wrestler in need of a makeover could not only gain serious momentum by beating a bona fide legend such as Cena but would also start the next chapter of his career with WWE’s second-most important title around his waist.

The victory over Cena would also build instant credibility. Just like a win over Cena helped launch the career of Kevin Owens, WWE could build yet another star by allowing the opponent to steal the win from the face of the company.

As for the ideal booking of Cena’s open challenge at Hell in a Cell, there are several viable options. Whether it’s a returning Superstar—such as Sami Zayn or Daniel Bryan—or a star who is making his main-roster debut—such as Samoa Joe or Hideo Itami—this would be the perfect opportunity to make a star for the future.

The ideal possible matchup would be a Triple Threat match between Cena, Dolph Ziggler and the newly debuted Tyler Breeze. He showed up on SmackDown to make his first appearance as a full-time character and clearly started a feud with Ziggler.

With Ziggler and Cena having a history, The Showoff can answer the United States champion’s open challenge. As he is making his way to the ring, Breeze could also answer the challenge, forcing Cena to turn it into a Triple Threat.

If WWE officials don’t want to allow Cena to take a clean pinfall, having Breeze earn the victory over Ziggler would protect Cena (as if he even needs it) and give Breeze the credibility he needs to not just become another midcard act.

Cena has the chance to help build a star such as Breeze into a legend and must show his love of the business at Hell in a Cell by putting over a fresh face who desperately needs the rub.
