John Cena vs. Seth Rollins: Steel Cage Match at WWE MSG Puts Fresh Spin on Feud

Brad JonesOct 2, 2015

John Cena and Seth Rollins have been delivering terrific matches all year. However, there's a certain point at which the well runs dry.

Repeated enough times, just about any dream match would turn into Sheamus vs. Randy Orton—and that is not a compliment. Familiarity breeds contempt, and that's particularly true when it comes to the world of wrestling.

The WWE style relies heavily on wrestlers having moves and sequences that are easily recognizable as their signature offence. As such, any heavily repeated contest is going to see those parts assembled in similar patterns before too long.

For the past several months, Cena and Rollins have been engaging in bouts where both men throw everything they have at each other in an attempt to gain an upper hand.

It's been electric to watch—and logical, considering both men are among the top performers in the company—but now, there needs to be a shake-up.

Rollins vs. Cena has adopted some of the same problems that the feud between Kevin Owens and Cena suffered from earlier in the year. Namely, there's a lack of variation in the matches themselves beyond their component parts being rearranged.

Neither feud has seemed like a series of matches with strong continuity from one bout to another. That could be forgiven in Owens' case because it was designed as a showcase of his abilities following his graduation to the main roster.

For Rollins, it seems more like a talented athlete spinning his wheels a little.

Of course, at Night of Champions he was set to square off with Sting as well as Cena, so the fact that the match was something of a retread could be forgiven. However, we now know that the feud is set to continue at least as far as the upcoming WWE Network broadcast of a live event from Madison Square Garden on Saturday.

This match will take place inside a steel cage, which is the perfect stipulation to breathe new life into the rivalry. There are simply more options available to both men, which should provide plenty of room to build upon their excellent chemistry together.

The match between Cena and Rollins will certainly be a test of the feud as a whole. What remains to be seen is whether it turns out to be a strong finish or an unnecessary continuation.
