Austin Daye Reportedly Signs with Cavaliers: Latest Contract Details, Reaction
A busy offseason for the Cleveland Cavaliers has continued with the reported addition of veteran forward Austin Daye.
According to Shams Charania of Yahoo Sports, Daye and the Cavaliers agreed to terms on a one-year deal.
Daye is a six-year NBA veteran who has bounced around, playing with the Detroit Pistons, San Antonio Spurs, Memphis Grizzlies, Toronto Raptors and Atlanta Hawks. He ended last season with the Hawks, playing 12 minutes in a game against the Chicago Bulls on April 15.
Signing with the Cavaliers does give Daye a chance to atone for last season in more ways than one. In addition to being on the sidelines as Cleveland swept Atlanta in the Eastern Conference Finals, the 27-year-old was waived by San Antonio in January.
After being let go by the Spurs, Daye told John Dudley of the Erie Times-News he understood the business part of the decision.
"I guess that's kind of how they do business," Daye said. "They like to have that 15th (roster) spot open for free agency and people who get waived. I was pretty surprised, but I stayed professional. When I got my opportunities I played well. It is what it is. It's the NBA. It's not friendly."
Over the summer, Daye played in the Drew League and made an impression with a 52-point game on July 5. He's been a decent three-point shooter in his NBA career, hitting 35.1 percent from behind the arc, so the Cavaliers can use him as another outside scorer.
Now he has a chance to be part of a loaded Cleveland roster with LeBron James, Kevin Love and eventually Kyrie Irving that can compete for a championship. Daye may not be a major piece of the puzzle, but Matthew Dellavedova emerged from the shadows to become a Cavaliers folk hero in the postseason.
Anything is possible for Daye, especially in a situation with an All-Star like James who can make all of his teammates look better.
