Junior Galette to Redskins: Latest Contract Details, Comments and Reaction

Adam WellsJul 31, 2015

Controversial linebacker Junior Galette has landed a second chance with an NFL team, agreeing to a deal with the Washington Redskins

The Redskins officially announced Gallette's signing on July 31 on their website. NFL Network's Albert Breer reported the deal is for one year at the veteran's minimum.

Per Spotrac, the veteran's minimum for a player with between four and six years experience is $745,000.

Galette's agent, Alvin Keels, announced the pact on Twitter, adding his client will not be taking this opportunity lightly:

"

Junior is grateful for the second chance he is being afforded by the Redskins and is looking forward to not only producing on the field but also to display the veteran leadership in the locker room. ... The deal is for the league minimum. This deal isn't about the money. Junior feels that he has a lot to prove both on and off of the field. He is grateful for the opportunity.

"

In fact, Bleacher Report's Jason Cole reported Galette gave the Redskins first right of refusal when he enters free agency after the season.

According to a tweet from Mike Jones of the Washington Post, Redskins head coach Jay Gruden "watched Galette on tape, and look at him as a football player, ask him about his past, and as a group they decided to sign."

Zac Boyer of the Washington Times had more from Gruden, who said, "We feel like the locker room that we have is strong enough that we can help [Galette] out."

Redskins general manager Scot McCloughan spoke about the team's vetting process prior to deciding to commit to Galette, via John Keim of ESPN:

"When the guy left my room, he was crying. He was sweating," McCloughan added about Galette's desire to join the franchise, per Boyer.

Breer pointed out why this could turn out to be a good deal for Washington on the field:

NFL Network's Ian Rapoport added that Washington is very high on the character of players and coaches already in place, believing that strong leadership will rub off on a player with a questionable past.

This has been a whirlwind offseason for Galette. In June, Larry Holder of the Times-Picayune reported the 27-year-old was purportedly the subject of a YouTube video from 2013 showing a man striking multiple people, including a woman, with a belt. Galette's lawyer denied that it was his client in the video, however.

Galette is also facing a civil lawsuit from a woman who accused him of domestic violence stemming from an alleged incident on January 5. The New Orleans Saints then released him after five seasons with the team on July 27.

Bleacher Report's Jason Cole reported the Redskins were confident the linebacker wouldn't face a suspension for the incidents:

McCloughan spoke about the chance of losing Galette, saying "there's a chance" he could be suspended, but he didn't know the status of the league's investigation, via Boyer.

Despite Galette's past, McCloughan stood by his new player, saying: "I promise you guys this, being new here and knowing where we're going, I'm not going to bring a bad guy in here," via Jones.

On Wednesday, TMZ Sports reported Galette was charged with three misdemeanors following a traffic stop in Louisiana on July 7 and will appear in court on August 10.

He also had a meeting with the NFL in New York regarding alleged domestic violence case, though he told Mike Triplett of ESPN.com he's not expecting to be punished. The league has not confirmed the meeting took place or commented on the situation, according to Evan Woodbery of the Times-Picayune.

Based on the low financial investment the Redskins have made in Galette, the move doesn't seem like a bad idea. He remains a very good pass-rusher, recording 10 sacks last season.

Brian McNally of 106.7 The Fan added that Gruden said Galette may not start at outside linebacker. However, he will definitely have an impact.

If Washington's coaches and players believe in the system and feel like Galette can be a model citizen working with the staff while knowing this is likely his last best shot to rebuild his value, it's got the potential to be a strong signing.
