Chelsea Transfer News: Antonio Candreva Considers Move, Latest Blues Rumours
Antonio Candreva could reportedly be open to a move to Chelsea after being snubbed for the captaincy at current club Lazio.
As noted by Will Giles in Metro, the Blues look to be in the market for a new winger this summer—perhaps due to doubts over the future of Juan Cuadrado—and have been linked with Barcelona's Pedro and Napoli's Jose Callejon.
Candreva has now emerged as a target for the Blues after the 28-year-old was overlooked for the Lazio captaincy and could be persuaded away from the Rome outfit, per Italian outlet La Repubblica (h/t Giles).
Candreva joined Lazio in 2012, and his agent, Federico Pastorello, believes he deserved more than to be named vice-captain to Lucas Biglia, per Corriere dello Sport (h/t Giles):
"Considering Antonio’s path, I thought he deserved recognition and different consideration.
In the way he’s represented himself, he’s shown enough in these last three and a half years.
It’s not a lack of respect for Biglia or other teammates. [Stefano] Pioli has chosen another way and Candreva has taken it badly.
He will continue with his work as he always has, but he can’t hide the deep disappointment.
Every summer there are four or five clubs that ask for Candreva, even important clubs playing in the Champions League, but an appointment was never made with them.
"
Italian Candreva could be a useful addition at Stamford Bridge, as he has all the attributes of the ideal winger.
He is a creator who can run at defenders and also chips in with several goals. His return in Serie A last term was 10 goals and nine assists, per WhoScored.com.
Chelsea boss Jose Mourinho may have concerns, though, over Candreva's lack of defensive responsibility, an attribute treasured highly by the Portuguese.
Mourinho likely needs to make some more additions to his squad, as the Blues have had a quiet summer thus far, per Bleacher Report's Andy Brassell:
Their Premier League rivals—Manchester United, Manchester City and Arsenal—have made good additions in the transfer window, and the Blues could do with some further depth, especially in central midfield.
Candreva could be an experienced and effective addition—especially if Cuadrado is on his way out—and he is clearly not overly happy with his situation at Lazio.
However, he should not be the only other addition Chelsea make as they bid to defend their Premier League title.
