Puig Reportedly Re-Claimed off Waivers, Won't be Traded This Month
Tuesday, Aug. 11
Jayson Stark of ESPN reported Puig was put on waivers last week, but was claimed and pulled back by the team and won't be traded in August.
According to USA Today's Bob Nightengale on July 27, the Los Angeles Dodgers' attempts to offload the 24-year-old outfielder aren't going particularly well:
Upon his arrival in 2013, Puig was one of the most exciting players in MLB. Between his incredible physical gifts and on-field eccentricity, you couldn't take your eyes off the Dodgers star. But his production has dipped in each of the last two years.
In 217 plate appearances, Puig is batting just .253 with a .423 slugging percentage, which is down from .296 and .480, respectively, last year. He has also hit six home runs and driven in 22 runs.
MLB.com's Ken Gurnick reported last week that L.A. hadn't promised Puig any sort of trade immunity.
Manager Don Mattingly attempted to dismiss the issue.
"I don't know if it's speculation or talk," Mattingly said, per Gurnick. "None in the inner circle."
As much as Puig has struggled, it would be surprising to see the Dodgers deal him before the non-waiver deadline on July 31. He still seems to possess a wealth of untapped potential, while his contract—$19.5 million between 2016 and 2018—isn't unwieldy by any means.
For the right price, though, Puig would be a solid—if extremely risky—addition for another team.
