Where's Ramos? Twitter Reacts as Manchester Utd Sign Goalkeeper Sergio Romero
The goalkeeping situation at Manchester United remains thoroughly unresolved, but the club now have a new option between the sticks. In the early hours of Monday morning, the Red Devils announced that they had secured the services of Sergio Romero, the Argentinian whom Louis van Gaal brought to AZ Alkmaar in 2007 to eventually make him a league champion:
"Welcome to #mufc, Sergio Romero! #WelcomeRomero pic.twitter.com/qJE0w28Iuc
— Manchester United (@ManUtd) July 27, 2015"
As the club released pictures of the 28-year-old posing with his new shirt, many fans couldn't help but notice that his demeanour didn't fit a man who had just signed for one of the world's biggest football clubs:
"Never seen a player look so depressed to sign for United as Sergio Romero does.
— Nathan (@NathaanMason) July 27, 2015"
Of course, it escaped no one's attention that Romero is a partial namesake of a certain other high-profile United transfer target, which led to an eruption of banter:
"No Louis, we said "sign Sergio RAMOS", not ROMERO..!! pic.twitter.com/OBlO1q6DeS
— Judge Me Next May.. (@GzaDaRambler) July 27, 2015"
""I said Sergio Ramos, not Sergio Romero." pic.twitter.com/cojJLaWF99

"Ed Woodward you are wrong this time i told Sergio Ramos not Sergio Romero
— ManUtdology (@ManUtdology) July 27, 2015"
"United fans when they thought they signed Sergio Ramos then read it was Sergio Romero #LFC #MUFC pic.twitter.com/SI4UCq953c

Essentially, the feeling of United's fanbase on the Romero/Ramos matter was perfectly summed up by this tweet:
Some had a bit of fun suggesting that Romero was the anticlimactic answer to LVG's secret player riddle:
In light of the plight suffered by Romero's countryman Angel Di Maria, one fan offered some home-security advice:
Despite standing at 6'3", Romero's nickname is "Chiquito," which is Spanish for "tiny." This is because his basketball-star brother is an impressive 6'11" (per the Mirror). It seems that the Argentinian might have his post-training lunch spot sorted:
Banter aside, many United fans seemed happy with their new shot-stopper:
"Romero is the perfect signing - great back up if DDG stays and worthy first choice if he goes.
— Neil (@neilv93) July 27, 2015"
Some, however, subtly warned that the man who may or may not replace David De Gea has some red flags against his name:
Others weren't quite so subtle in their criticism of the Albiceleste's No. 1:
"Romero is poor

Meanwhile, Jake Humphrey has a theory. It's a theory that's been partially disproved by the likes of Keylor Navas and Asmir Begovic, but it's a theory:
It remains unclear whether Romero's arrival means anything for De Gea's much-mooted return to Spain, but one Real Madrid fan is already putting the champers on ice:
