Arsenal Transfer News: Jeff Reine-Adelaide Going Nowhere, Latest Gunners Rumours

Nick AkermanJul 27, 2015

Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger has confirmed youngster Jeff Reine-Adelaide will spend next season at the Emirates Stadium.

The 17-year-old midfielder put on a show during the Gunners' 1-0 Emirates Cup win over Wolfsburg on Sunday, having made his bow during the 6-0 thrashing of Lyon on Saturday. Arsenal supporters may be forgiven for glossing over the starlet's arrival in May, but already he appears to have the size, technical skill and ambition to be a Premier League star.

Wenger doesn't want to loan the player out, per Sky Sports: "He will definitely be here," said the boss. "He is 17 years old and looks very promising, but he needs to work with us now for a year with the first team, to play with the U21s and develop. There is a fantastic potential there and he will stay with us."

However, Wenger admitted he doesn't know if the player will feature in the senior squad next term. Reine-Adelaide believes working under Wenger is the "logical choice" for the development of his career. He interested Barcelona and Newcastle United before moving to north London—per Adam Shergold of the MailOnline—but is keen to establish himself in Wenger's plans. He spoke to Onze Mundial (h/t Shergold):

"

Arsenal is an institution. I have always enjoyed this club and how his team plays. When discussing my departure with my family, we quickly turned to the Arsenal option. Just because I think the philosophy of play introduced by Mr Wenger for years suits me. Arsenal was the logical choice for me.

Wenger told Arsenal Player (h/t Shergold) that Reine-Adelaide is "something special" and a "great talent." He's the type of youngster who can excite crowds every time he receives possession, highlighted by BT Sport:

Derek Rae, commentator on BT Sport, noted the Frenchman's performance:

B/R UK highlighted how Wenger is the only Arsenal manager Reine-Adelaide has ever known:

Wenger wants the player to develop into an "all-round midfielder," reported by Shergold. At this early stage it's clear he can easily slot into multiple roles. His long strides forward aren't too dissimilar to the style of Abou Diaby, who added midfield grit and attacking impetus when in form. Reine-Adelaide knows how to beat a man, however, and he could find himself pushed wider with a view to cutting in.

He made a real impression over the Emirates Cup weekend and, vitally, is focused on improving under Wenger. The boss recently suggested he wants to prioritise the development of youth over spending huge sums, per Matt Barlow of the MailOnline:

"

We want to combine stronger financial resources with faith in our philosophy. We want to give chances to young players, build them inside the club with our culture.

Most clubs who have been successful have done that well.

You can take Barcelona or Manchester United, who had a generation and built their success on players who came from within.

These are our values and it is our DNA. It's important we keep that.

According to Tuttosport (h/t Daily Express and Telegraph Sport) Wenger is "ready to broker" a deal for Juventus striker Fernando Llorente on Monday. He would add height and physical power to the club's attacking options of Olivier Giroud, Danny Welbeck and Theo Walcott.

The Sun (h/t Telegraph Sport) reported comment from an unnamed source when discussing Arsenal's interest: "They have made an inquiry but there is no bid yet." Wenger recently made it clear he isn't getting caught up on adding new strikers to the squad, per Arsenal's official Twitter feed:

Expectations should be high for the Gunners next season. Arsenal won the FA Cup and finished third in the Premier League last term, but they must now focus on launching a genuine challenge in the latter.

Competition in the squad is going to be key—players such as Reine-Adelaide can push regular first-team stars to improve—as we saw with Kurt Zouma and Ruben Loftus-Cheek at Chelsea last season. Wenger is one or two world-class stars away from possessing a thoroughly stocked squad, so he must keep his options open until the transfer window closes.
