Gold Cup Final 2015: Live Stream Schedule for Jamaica vs. Mexico

Tom SunderlandJul 26, 2015

Jamaica will attempt to overcome the odds once more on Sunday evening as they face Mexico in the final of the 2015 Gold Cup.

El Tri have won the tournament a record six times, but the Reggae Boyz are seeking their maiden Gold Cup triumph, having already beaten their previous best finish of third.

Sunday's climactic curtain call has a lot riding on it, with the victor facing a playoff fixture against the United States, the winner of which will book their place at the 2017 Confederations Cup.

Jamaica Happy With Underdog Role

Coming into this year's Gold Cup, the hopes of seeing a Caribbean representative make their way to the final looked slim as Mexico, the U.S. and Costa Rica stood as pre-tournament favourites.

Having seen his side subvert the odds to beat the United States on Wednesday, Reggae Boyz boss Winfried Schafer is content with that dynamic, telling ESPN FC's Tom Marshall the Copa America was of particular help:

"

Very hard work ... I built a new team in one year. New players [came in] from England, new players [came in] from MLS. Team-building isn't only about playing good football -- team building is also about team spirit. We have very good team spirit.

We played three matches at the Copa America very well. We lost 1-0, 1-0, 1-0, [but] our team has more confidence because you know what you have to do for the next tournament.

"

When asked if the bulk of the pressure rests with Miguel Herrera's men, Schafer replied: "Yes. Mexico is one of the best teams in the world."

There was a time when one might have thought the Stars and Stripes were far more advanced than Jamaica, and yet Schafer's side were deserved victors in their semi-final. Herrera is wary of his final foes, per ESPN Tri:

According to Marshall, Schafer goes on to proclaim that reggae legend Bob Marley's music is present in all facets of his daily routine, whether it's "in the morning, in the evening, Bob Marley, Bob Marley, Bob Marley."

And that's part of Jamaica's appeal, with the unassumingly calm combatants evidently making moves up the international ladder. Mexico would underestimate the Reggae Boyz at their peril, but the question is whether Schafer's side have one more trick up their sleeves.

A Final Stroke of Luck?

Refereeing controversies have been well-documented at this year's Gold Cup, with Mexico believed by some to have benefited from a string of decisions on their way to the Philadelphia final.

That unfortunate outcome was confirmed on Saturday as the Associated Press reported CONCACAF had admitted referee errors in Mexico's 2-1 win over Panama in extra time last week:

It wasn't the first time El Tri advanced in the competition by the skin of their teeth, with captain Andres Guardado converting a 124th-minute penalty against Costa Rica in the quarter-finals, too.

It's a bitter blow for Herrera to hear his captain is a doubt for Sunday's clash alongside brothers Giovani and Jonathan dos Santos:

Guardado leads Mexico's scorers at the Gold Cup with five strikes to his name, with overall leader Clint Dempsey having netted against Panama on Saturday to take his tournament tally to seven.

With the world watching, CONCACAF are under some pressure to ensure Sunday's final comes off without controversy and a decisive victor emerging from the collision.
