Mexico vs. Panama: Date, Time, Live Stream, More for 2015 Gold Cup Semifinal

Mike ChiariJul 22, 2015

The 2015 CONCACAF Gold Cup has been whittled down to four teams, and Wednesday's semifinal clash between Mexico and Panama is a must-win affair for both nations if they hope to compete in the 2017 Confederations Cup in Russia.

The winner of the Mexico versus Panama matchup will take on either the United States or Jamaica in the Gold Cup final. Team USA is already guaranteed a spot in a one-game playoff for the Confederations Cup berth at the very least by virtue of its 2013 Gold Cup title, but Mexico and Panama don't have that luxury since both need to win this tournament.

Predicting USMNT Roster 🔮

No team has won more Gold Cups than Mexico's nine, and while Panama has never won it, it was the runner-up to the United States two years ago after beating El Tri in the semis.

Here is everything you need to know about the highly anticipated rematch along with a prediction for who will come out on top and play for the Gold Cup on Sunday.

When: Wednesday, July 22 at 9 p.m. ET

Where: Georgia Dome in Atlanta

Watch: Fox Sports 2

Live Stream: Fox Sports Go

Mexico Player to Watch: Andres Guardado

Mexico arguably boasts more attacking talent than any other squad in the Gold Cup, but there is little doubt that captain Andres Guardado has been the biggest key to El Tri's success thus far.

The 28-year-old winger is enjoying an excellent tournament thus far, as he is tied for the team lead with three goals along with striker Oribe Peralta. The PSV Eindhoven star also has 11 shots on goal to his credit and has set his teammates up with numerous scoring chances.

His impact on the pitch is undeniable, but he also seems to have a greater intangible benefit to the team than any other player. He has stepped up in a big way as El Tri's captain, which was on full display when he stepped up to take a penalty kick late in a tie game against Costa Rica in the Gold Cup quarterfinals.

As seen in this video, courtesy of CONCACAF, he confidently drilled the ball into the back of the net to push his team into the semis:

Following the goal, Guardado explained to Univision the burden on his shoulders and his willingness to accept it as Mexico's captain and best all-around player, according to Jon Arnold of Goal.com.

"I knew I had to take the responsibility. The group was confident in me," Guardado said. "They're the type of decisions you take in a second, and fortunately, everything went well."

Despite Guardado's obvious talent, Ives Galarcep of Goal.com questions whether he has been utilized to the best of his abilities as an international player:

He has looked like a dangerous and productive player in every Gold Cup match thus far, but he and Mexico have to prove they can get the job done in a big-match situation once again after sneaking past Costa Rica.

If El Tri are going to avenge their loss to Los Canaleros from two years ago, then they will almost certainly need another strong showing from their captain.

Panama Player to Watch: Jaime Penedo

Based on the fact that Panama has scored only four goals at the Gold Cup to Mexico's tournament-leading 11, it is clear that defense and goalkeeping will be absolutely key to La Marea Roja's success in the semifinal.

Because of that, much of the onus will fall on goalkeeper Jaime Penedo. The 33-year-old stopper won the MLS Cup last year with the Los Angeles Galaxy, and he has been a driving force behind Panama's run at the Gold Cup thus far.

Panama have allowed just four goals in four matches thanks largely to Penedo's spectacular play. He was especially strong in the team's quarterfinal penalty kicks win over Trinidad and Tobago, as he made the game-clinching save, as seen in this video, courtesy of Fox Soccer:

Following that massive play, Panama head coach Hernan Dario Gomez was extremely complimentary of his goalkeeper, according to Galarcep:

Penedo has a long history of success at the Gold Cup, as he took Tournament Top Goalkeeper honors in both 2005 and 2013. He held Mexico to one goal in the semifinals two years ago but realizes things have changed significantly since then, per FIFA.com:

"

I don't think there are any similarities between that game and this. Mexico are a different side to what they were then. They've got a different coach and some new players. Things change a lot in football from one week to the next, and there's no way you can compare one game to another when there's two years between them.

"

One thing that hasn't changed, though, is the notion that Penedo must be an absolute rock between the pipes for Panama in order for it to have any hopes of knocking off El Tri.

Mexico is likely to be the more aggressive and dangerous squad from an attacking standpoint, which means Penedo will probably be under siege at certain points. If he can withstand the barrage and perhaps push the match into penalties, then the Panamanians will suddenly have the upper hand.

Prediction: Mexico 2, Panama 1

Both Mexico and Panama badly want to win Wednesday's semifinal match in order to have a chance to play for the Gold Cup championship, but it is fair to speculate that El Tri may be the more desperate team.

Not only do they have revenge in mind after Panama ousted them two years ago, but they also have a winning tradition to live up to. That could add some unwanted pressure, but this Mexico team appears ready to rise to the occasion.

They have a seemingly endless array of attacking talent, including Guardado, Peralta, Carlos Vela and Giovani dos Santos. There is legitimate concern regarding their defensive capabilities, but they will benefit from Panama's lack of firepower.

Los Canaleros got the better of Mexico two years ago by a 2-1 score, but in a fitting act of symmetry, El Tri will advance to the 2015 Gold Cup final by the same tally.
