The left-back signed for the Blues last summer in a £15.8 million deal from then-reigning La Liga champions Atleti, per BBC Sport. However, he found himself out in the cold at Stamford Bridge, never becoming a first-choice option.

The player left a "thank you" note for Chelsea supporters on his official Twitter timeline:

Luis was brought to west London with fellow Atletico team-mates Diego Costa and Thibaut Courtois, strengthening the Chelsea squad as they made a full-on assault on the Premier League title.

Mourinho's decisions in the transfer market were proven wise, with the three players contributing to Premier League and League Cup glory.

However, Luis struggled to displace Cesar Azpilicueta in the Chelsea defence, as the Spaniard became one of the club's most consistent performers.

The 29-year-old Luis only started nine league games in 2014-15, per WhoScored.com, and his opportunities were unlikely to improve next term.

Luis was one of the best full-backs in Europe just a year ago, and he hasn't become a poor player overnight.

An extended stay at Stamford Bridge would have been financially appealing to the Brazilian, but as he nears 30, it is a first-team starting place he requires.

At Atletico, Luis is sure to thrive and reclaim his spot as one of the continent's best left-side defenders.
