Matthew Dellavedova to Re-Sign with Cavaliers: Latest Contract Details, Reaction

Alec NathanJul 27, 2015

Following a solid 2015 NBA Finals performance in relief of the injured Kyrie Irving, point guard Matthew Dellavedova reportedly agreed Monday to return to the Cleveland Cavaliers "on a one-year deal worth approximately $1.2 million," according to ESPN's Dave McMenamin

Chris Mannix of Sports Illustrated confirmed McMenamin's report and added that the "Cavs' tax situation made offering [him] the $4 million per season he was seeking unrealistic. He'll try to cash in next summer."

The deal is worth significantly less than the multiyear deal RealGM's Shams Charania reported the two sides were discussing earlier this month, which would have been worth $3 million to $5 million per year.

While the Cavaliers agreed to terms on a two-year, $4.3 million deal with score-first point guard Mo Williams on July 6, according to Yahoo Sports' Adrian Wojnarowski, Cleveland also decided to pad its backcourt depth with the defensive-minded Dellavedova.

It makes sense the Cavs brought back Delly when they did, as Peter Socotch of CSNNW.com recently reported that the Portland Trail Blazers were expressing interest in him. On July 24, Socotch reported there were "mumblings" the team would sign him to an offer sheet.

The Cavaliers' defensive rating improved by 6.4 points per 100 possessions during the playoffs when the Aussie was on the floor, according to NBA.com

"The guys love Delly because he plays with all his heart, and he cares first about the team, and only about the team," Cavaliers head coach David Blatt said after Cleveland's 96-91 Game 3 win over the Golden State Warriors in the 2015 NBA Finals, according to ABC Cleveland's Tim Rearden

Although Dellavedova won't often provide much punch as a scorer, he did shoot a stellar 40.7 percent from three during the regular season while averaging 4.8 points per game. He also erupted for a playoff career-high 20 points in Game 3 of the Finals while starting in place of Irving.

However, the 24-year-old still has plenty of work to do as it pertains to his efficiency in the pick-and-roll. Last season, Dellavedova ranked in the 10th percentile as a pick-and-roll producer, generating 0.53 points per possession when he handled the ball on those plays, according to Synergy Sports

That said, if he can continue to hound opposing ball-handlers the way he did throughout the Finals, Cleveland will accept any future offensive contributions as a bonus.
