Charlie Villanueva Re-Signs with Mavericks: Latest Contract Details and Reaction
Forward Charlie Villanueva has agreed to return to the Dallas Mavericks on a one-year contract for the veteran's minimum.
"We've come to terms and I'm returning back to Dallas," Villanueva wrote on his blog Tuesday. "It's only right. Since Day 1 the organization has welcomed me and my family with open arms. I felt an immediate brotherhood with my teammates. I have nothing but respect for Mark Cuban and Donnie Nelson. Those guys operate a first-class organization."
ESPN.com's Marc Stein initially reported the news, indicating the deal would be signed at some point this week. The NBA's moratorium period ends July 9, so Villanueva can officially be signed any time after Thursday.
The veteran power forward spent 2014-15 with the Mavericks after a five-year stint in Detroit. He averaged 6.3 points and 2.3 rebounds, working low minutes as an offensive piece when Dirk Nowitzki sat. Stein indicated Villanueva's time in Dallas won him "a lot of admirers" within the organization. In his blog post, Villanueva indicated he also considered the Clippers, the Wizards and the Kings as options.
Bringing Villanueva back won't swing the championship picture, but it will help Dallas continue filling out its roster after a whirlwind free agency. DeAndre Jordan and Wes Matthews are set to join the organization, per Stein and NBA.com's David Aldridge, which came at the expense of the departed Monta Ellis, Al-Farouq Aminu, Rajon Rondo and Tyson Chandler. Amar'e Stoudemire, another veteran piece who can help out offensively, may also choose to leave for a larger role.
Sacrificing depth for big-ticket items is a risk; the Mavs have gotten by in recent seasons by managing the minutes of their stars. That won't be as possible heading into 2015-16, which makes guys like Villanueva all the more important.
