Dani Carvajal, Real Madrid Agree on New Contract: Latest Details and Reaction
Real Madrid announced on Wednesday that full-back Dani Carvajal agreed to a new five-year contract, ensuring the youth product remains with the club for the foreseeable future.
Los Blancos' official Twitter account confirmed the deal:
The 23-year-old has been the club's regular starter at right-back since returning from Bayer Leverkusen in 2013, playing a vital role in Los Blancos' run to the 2014 Champions League title. He is a complete player, combining excellent athleticism, vision and the ability to contribute across the length of the pitch.
Carvajal's qualities can be seen below:
Despite his reliable performances for the capital-based club over the past few years, Madrid recently invested heavily in FC Porto star Danilo, who was signed for a whopping €31.5 million, per ESPN FC's Adriana Garcia.
The Brazilian told Marca (h/t the MailOnline's John Downes) he expects to start the season as Real's third-choice right-back, but obviously, his goal is to be No. 1 before long: “Right now, I'm third choice for the right-back spot. Carvajal and (Alvaro) Arbeloa have made history together with the club, and I must win my place in the side.”
Both Danilo and Carvajal are the same age and have similar profiles, and both will be eyeing the starting position.

Depth certainly won't be an issue for Los Blancos, and it will be interesting to see whether Carvajal can fend off the challenge from his new team-mate. Danilo is a more explosive attacker, but the pragmatism of new boss Rafa Benitez will likely see Carvajal's qualities valued just as much.
If Carvajal keeps performing the way he has over the past two years, Danilo will have his work cut out for him. With this new contract, Real have made a very clear statement that despite the Brazilian's arrival, they still have full faith in their player.
