Manchester United Transfer News: Matteo Darmian Bid Made, Latest Rumours
Torino chairman Urbano Cairo has handed Manchester United a hasty deadline as they seek to patch up a deal for right-back Matteo Darmian, having already seen a bid for his signature rejected this week.
It gives the Red Devils just under a week to make their move for the Italy international, with Rob Dawson of the Manchester Evening News quoting Cairo as saying the defender's suitors must be quick.
"Everyone who arrives at Bormio will stay for the rest of the year," he said. "Extra time has begun and on Sunday there will be the final whistle, that is the deadline. Three concrete offers have arrived for Darmian, but out of respect for those who made the offers I won't reveal them."
"An extraordinary player such as Matteo will want to try to win the Champions League and Torino can't win it."
It's a refreshingly honest approach from the Torino figurehead, who would appear open to do business for Darmian as long as the price is right.
Serie A writer Omid Zamani cites Sky Italia in reporting that United have already lodged a €15 million (£10.6 million) bid for the player but will have to increase that offer in order to land their target:
Manchester United manager Louis van Gaal is hoping to upgrade his right-back options this summer after utilising Antonio Valencia in a wing-back capacity for much of his maiden season in England.
However, Bleacher Report's Andy Brassell believes Everton's Republic of Ireland international Seamus Coleman could be the answer to those problems:
Rafael has slipped down the pecking order at Old Trafford, while Valencia won't be seen as a long-term solution in the position, having played almost his entire career in a more advanced wing role.
Darmian comes as a highly rated asset of the Italian top flight too, as David Amoyal of GianlucaDiMarzio.com numbers among his admirers, believing him to be a player worth getting excited about:
United are under pressure to beef up their resources this summer prior to a much-awaited return to the Champions League, requiring multiple options across the park in order to withstand a packed calendar.
The prospect of featuring in Europe's premier competition would certainly be seen as an alluring opportunity for Darmian, with Amoyal adding that United need to bump their bid up by another €5 million to get their man:
Milan academy graduate Darmian has earned 13 caps for the Azzurri since making his senior international debut in 2014, rising to become a staple of the Italy setup.
It's shaping up to be a busy summer at Old Trafford, but the Red Devils will have to move quickly if they're to land Darmian after learning of their Sunday deadline.
